JULES OLITSKI

Installation views from our current exhibition ‘Olitski Paintings’ at Nybrogatan 20. Featuring Olitski’s “Mitt” paintings, a distinctive series that emerged in 1988 and exemplifies his inventive approach to materials and surface. Join us in celebrating one of the foremost figures of postwar American abstraction.

On view until 30 September.

Jules Olitski (1922 - 2007) rose to prominence in the 1960s as a central voice in Color Field painting, liberating color from drawing to breathe across the canvas as pure sensation. By the 1970s and 1980s, he turned toward a far more physical approach, building paint in dense, heavily textured impasto, scraping and layering pigment until the canvas became almost sculptural. The works in this exhibition, painted between 1989 and 1993, belong to this late and deeply personal period, charged with a spiritual intensity that is felt as much as understood.

Olitski Paintings is the first presentation of Olitski’s late paintings in Sweden.

JULES OLITSKI

We are delighted to invite you to the opening of Jules Olitski’s solo exhibition ‘Olitski Paintings’, Tuesday 25 August, 5-7 pm at Wetterling Gallery on Nybrogatan 20.

The exhibition brings together Olitski’s “Mitt” paintings, a distinctive series that emerged in 1988 and exemplifies his inventive approach to materials and surface. The works originated with a painter’s mitt, purchased by the artist’s wife to paint an iron fence on their property. Intrigued by the object and its unfamiliar possibilities, Olitski began using it as a tool for making art, working acrylic gels and paints directly onto the canvas. The mitt allowed him to mix and spread the materials in sweeping, gestural movements, creating richly layered surfaces in which colors seem to merge and intertwine. The series also marked Olitski’s use of newly developed interference pigments, whose transparent and pearlescent qualities cause the paintings to shift in hue and luminosity as the viewer moves around them. Works such as ’Beauty of the Women of Asher’ (1989) demonstrate the remarkable visual effects of this technique, transforming the painted surface into something dynamic and continually changing.

TONY CRAGG

Don’t miss the last chance to experience our first solo exhibition with Tony Cragg, one of the most influential sculptors of our time. On view at the gallery on Kungsportsavenyen 29 in Gothenburg until 18 August.

Ambitious in both scale and scope, the exhibition brings together a significant selection of sculptures that highlight Cragg’s distinctive approach to form and material. Working primarily in bronze, steel, and other industrial media, Cragg creates fluid, dynamic structures that seem to evolve organically, balancing the abstract with references to the human body and the natural world. The works on view range from monumental pieces to more intimate forms, offering a comprehensive insight into his sculptural language.

We are delighted to invite you for the opening of Astrid Kruse Jensens solo exhibition “The Persistence Of Becoming” at the gallery on Nybrogatan 20, Thursday, 28 May, 5-7 pm in the presence of the artist.

The exhibition brings together recent photographic works, hanging glass sculptures inspired by the landscape of Rungstedlund - the home of Karen Blixen - and new experimental glass pieces in which glass negatives more than 100 years old are fused within blown glass. These photographic sculptures continue the artist’s inquiry into the boundaries of photography, extending the medium into tactile and spatial form.
