En del av Sverige - Finissage and artist talk

All things must come to an end and to celebrate, the kind people at Kran are setting up a closing event and an artist talk with yours truly.

This exhibition is a part of an ongoing project that keeps evolving and things are brewing. So I guess it’s not an end but a pause.

So until next time,
Stay strong!

Saturday the 6th 13:00-15:00 at Kran.
There will be beers, wine and pretzels for all.

Apologies for the radio silence. The open call for kran 6 closed over a week ago and to be honest, we’ve been a bit stunned by the response.

Almost 150 photographers have sent in photos, which is more than our other open calls combined. We’re now going through all the submissions and you can expect to hear back from us in the next couple of weeks.

Thank you all so much for wanting to be part of our little project.

Team kran / no rules.

Join us for the kran photo market!
A chance to sell/buy/trade/give away photo-related things.

Sunday 31 May
13:00-15:00
Kockumsgatan 2

The concept is simple - we provide the space, you bring the stuff. The space = the gallery as well as outside the gallery, weather permitting.

You take care of all transaction yourself.

One important rule: Whatever you bring and you don’t sell/trade/give away must be gone from the gallery at the end of the same day anyway.

The exhibition is still on the walls for you to enjoy. And the zines etc are available for purchase as usual.

Thanks!

En del av Sverige — Part of Sweden
7/7

Growing up in Sweden during the 90s, there was a literal graffiti war going on. Far-right and white supremacist groups covered walls and tunnels with racist slogans, while others responded just as quickly with messages of resistance and solidarity instead.

The conservative and extremist movements we see today obviously never disappeared. Much of it simply moved online. But every now and then, you still come across small reminders in the real world that there are good people out there too.

En del av Sverige — Part of Sweden

In this modern world, traces of yesterday still remain – like partner dancing. Once a common sight in any Swedish town, where people of all ages would gather in their local Folkets park to dance. Now it’s a rare find but a heartwarming one nonetheless.

En del av Sverige — Part of Sweden

The million programme. That was the state’s solution to housing shortages and overcrowded living. The ambition was to provide high-quality options, that raised the living standard. But no matter how many fountains were built, few wanted to live in the large-scale, uniform developments.

Those who could afford to moved away, turning the grand vision into marginalized areas.

Although well-intentioned, these concrete jungles serve as a reminder that the million programme never really reflected what the people wanted.

En del av Sverige — Part of Sweden

We view ourselves as a well-mannered and respectful bunch. Hesitant to start discussions, mindful of personal space and to never offend.

Yet our vocabulary is rich with profanities and one of our most beloved curse word is k*k (dick).

En del av Sverige — Part of Sweden
3/7

We have a strange relationship with dancing. Most of us don’t partake in it, out of fear of looking stupid (probably because we don’t really know how to do it). Midsummer is an exception, when we’re more than happy to hop around like frogs or play a pretend violin. Go out dancing on a Saturday night? Unheard of.

“I never dance sober” are words we live by. Which means the opposite is true. Perhaps that’s why we up until recently had a law regulating spontaneous dancing in restaurants and bars. As soon as alcohol enters the picture, the dancing shoes come on.

En del av Sverige — Part of Sweden

2/7

Few things can be considered as Swedish as EPA, traditionally old cars converted into some kind of semi tractor so that teenagers are allowed to drive them.

They are pimped out with everything from sub woofers, distinctive rims and whatever you can hang on or in them.

It’s so established that they even have their own genre of music — electronic, bass heavy dance music best enjoyed in a confined space with the volume turned up.

But what’s specifically Swedish about car culture, pink cowboy hats, coca-cola and half naked ladies hanging from the rearview mirror?
