This movement originated in America in the 1940s and became popular in the 1950s. Expressionism can be summed up in two main points: freedom in the form of expression and the striving to explore the subconscious. A group of American artists were interested in a way of working that would be able to visualize the expression of the subconscious directly on the canvas. Many artists associated with this art direction worked quickly and painted with unconventional methods, such as pouring or splashing paint directly on the surface, so chance and misfortune would play a significant role in creation.
