ON OUR TRAVELS — Street Photography Workshop
with The Nonconformist & Livia Mateiaș

Sometimes the city reveals itself only when we slow down.
When we look with patience.
When we allow the light, the people, and the small gestures to reach us.

ON OUR TRAVELS is a street photography workshop and an invitation to see differently — to turn walking through the city into a visual practice, to notice emotion in simple things, and to build the image in your mind before capturing it with your camera.
The Nonconformist, an artist from Stuttgart who lived in Zürich and London, will guide you in discovering the beauty of Timișoara through your own vision and through the lens of the camera or phone.

Livia Mateiaș, visual artist and photographer, invites you to create images from light, urban rhythms, and fragments of life that become visual poetry.

Two days of exploration, dialogue, and photography, followed by a collective exhibition where participants’ works become part of a shared story.

Workshop
23 May - 14:30 - 18:30 - Meet & talk at DIGITAL:CANVAS\ - Spl. Peneș Curcanul nr. 4 - 5, 1st floor, C.30, Timișoara (entrance through the Azur building) - Then we explore the Fabric district

24 May - 14:30 - 18:30 - Meeting point: Unirii Square, next to the Art Museum - Discussion followed by a photo walk through the city

ON OUR TRAVELS - Group Exhibition - One Day Show
30 May - 19:00 - 22:00  – Exhibiting  a selection of the best photographs created during the workshop

Participation fee:
400 lei for adults
300 lei for students or groups (minimum 3 people)

Sâmbăta trecută am explorat lumea prin lentila nonconformismului.

A fost o expoziție care nu doar că a documentat călătorii, ci ne-a provocat să privim dincolo de destinații, dincolo de frumos și urât, în zona în care emoția se întâlnește cu viața.

Step into the world of The Nonconformist, a traveler through cultures, subcultures and stories - a free spirit who tells his life through images, music, film and urban art. The exhibition brings together fragments of his journey: from the early punk scene of West Germany, to London’s vibrant ’80s–’90s creative world, activism, fashion, music, and the more recent chapters of his life in Romania.

You’ll discover an extensive selection of photographs, projections of his visual and musical history, and stories about people and places. The evening ends with Video Box - a celebration of music videos curated so we can dance our way into the night.

One event. One evening. A lifetime of nonconformism.

*The Nonconformist grew up in Stuttgart’s early Punk Scene, then moved through Zurich and London, shaping music, activism, fashion and nightlife. He worked with bands like My Bloody Valentine, organized Björk’s first London concert, photographed for the London School of Fashion and DJed across the city.

After 2000, he reinvented himself as an ecological garden designer, driven by a deep love for nature and concern for humanity’s future. Brexit eventually pushed him to relocate to Oradea, Romania, where he joined MaHub and created a garden‑venue for concerts, theatre and club nights - the birthplace of the Video Box, later brought to Cluj and now to Timișoara.

Now, The Nonconformist brings all his passions together, creating a daily visual chronicle and supporting creatives worldwide through his stories and platforms.

O incursiune vizuală în arhiva rebelă a anilor '57–'85. Performance-ul creat de David Ellis și Steve Teers a transformat sunetul și imaginea într-o experiență vie, infuzată de energia brută a culturii pop-punk. 🤘

Nu a fost doar muzică, a fost un remix vizual al rebeliunii — un dialog între memorie, mișcare și nostalgia speculativă a unui „EP” care refuză să tacă.

David Ellis is a London-based writer, performer curator & self-described rogue enthusiast. He has been criss-crossing Europe and disciplines for over 40yrs. Having originally trained under David Bowie's maverick dancer / movement teacher Lindsay Kemp in 1976 he worked at the Dublin School of Art where he "gee'd - up the life class".

In 1994 he co-founded Puzzle club the influential platform for then developing artists including the legendary anarchic musical trio The Tiger Lilies whilst also travelling to Vilnius, Lithuania after its independence where for the next 25 years he curated various live literature 'actions' & experimental film screenings in collaboration with Jonas Mekas and others. In 2013 he facilitated improvisation workshops in Kaunas's Juvenile Detention Facility then repeated these in Buziaș, Romania.

Between 2016-21 he acted as an advocate with film Director Wim Wenders of Arta Cinema, Cluj-Napoca and 'King of Records' and tape-loop experimentalist Rodion Roșca.
