🇬🇧 🕯️🙏 Today, on National Holocaust Remembrance Day in Romania, we remember the suffering of the hundreds of thousands of Jews and Roma deported to Transnistria. The deportations, ordered by the Romanian government under the leadership of Ion Antonescu, began on October 9, 1941 and ended in 1942. On that fateful day, more than 26,000 Jews from Suceava, Câmpulung Moldovenesc, Vatra Dornei, Rădăuți, Gura Humorului and neighbouring towns were deported to Transnistria. At the same time, on September 14, 1941, the deportation of Jews from Bessarabia and Bukovina began.
💔 During the Holocaust, between 280,000 and 380,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews perished in Romania and its controlled territories. Of the approximately 25,000 Roma deported, 11,000 lost their lives. To these victims must be added some 135,000 Jews in Northern Transylvania, which was under Hungarian administration at the time.

A mintegy 25 000 deportált roma közül 11 000-en vesztették életüket.

🇬🇧🍂 After the seven joyous days of Sukkot, we arrive at the joyful holiday of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.
🏠 In the diaspora, the first day is known by its biblical name, Shemini Atzeret. On this day, we also say Yizkor to commemorate those who have passed on.
📜💃 The second day is known as Simchat Torah, and it marks the end of the annual Torah reading cycle. This festive occasion is characterised with dancing, which typically takes the form of seven circuits known as hakafot while the Torah scrolls are held aloft.
🕯️🍽️ Both days are marked with nighttime candle lighting, joyous meals both at night and throughout the day, and a day off from work. In Israel, the entire festival fits into a single frenetic 24-hour period.
📜🔄 The Torah instructs to fast on the eighth day after the seven days of Sukkot. This eighth day is doubled in the diaspora, making two days of yom tov. On the final day, it is usual to end the annual cycle of Torah reading and then immediately begin the annual cycle of Torah reading, dubbed Simchat Torah ("The Joy of the Torah").
🌱📖 Although the eighth day follows Sukkot, it is in many ways a separate festival (using the Four Kinds or residing in the sukkah are no longer performed). Diaspora Jews eat in the sukkah but do not offer the associated blessing (some eat only some of their meals in the sukkah on the eighth day but not the ninth). The noisy singing and dancing in the synagogue as the Torah scrolls are paraded in circles around the bimah is the essence of this holiday.
🏛️🔥 The Bible mentions Shemini Atzeret, although its specific purpose is unknown. It appears to have been a day devoted to the ritual cleansing of the Temple altar during the Second Temple period. When the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE, this function became obsolete. Although it marks the start of the rainy season in Israel and thus includes the year's first prayer for rain, its lack of a clear definition may have provided the impetus to combine it with Simchat Torah, a celebration of the end of one and the beginning of another annual cycle of Torah readings. This later festival is thought to have started during the mediaeval period.

Ennek a későbbi ünneplése feltehetően a középkorban kezdődött.

ramura de palmier este asociată cu coloana vertebrală și reprezintă verticalitatea morală;

forma frunzelor de mirt este asociată cu ochii 👁️ și înseamnă iluminare;

frunzele de salcie seamănă cu buzele 👄, fiind astfel legate de rugăciune;

In Hebrew, the word “lulav” means palm branch. Related to the holiday of Sukkot 🌿, the term lulav refers to branches of palm, myrtle, and willow bound together. Completed with a citron fruit (etrog) 🍋, the lulav is an essential element in the Sukkot rituals. The plants used for the lulav are symbolically related to parts of the body, and have the following meaning:

the palm tree is related to the backbone and represents uprightness;

the form of myrtle leaves is associated with the eyes 👁️ and means enlightenment;

willow leaves look like the lips 👄 and are therefore related to prayer;

the citron fruit 🍋 is a symbol of the heart ❤️ and it means understanding and wisdom.

Héberül a „lulav” szó pálmaágat jelent. A szukkót ünnepéhez kapcsolódva 🌿 a lulav kifejezés az egymáshoz kötözött pálma-, mirtusz- és fűzfaágakra utal. Egy cédrátcitrommal (etrog) 🍋 kiegészülve a lulav a szukkóti rituálék elengedhetetlen eleme. A lulavhoz használt növények szimbolikusan a testrészekhez kapcsolódnak, és a következő jelentéssel bírnak:

a pálmaág a gerinccel áll kapcsolatban, és az egyenességet képviseli;

a mirtuszlevelek formája a szemekhez 👁️ kapcsolódik, és a megvilágosodást jelenti;

a fűzfalevelek az ajkakra 👄 hasonlítanak, így az imádsághoz kapcsolódnak;

🍋🌿 Sukkot își are rădăcinile într-o străveche sărbătoare a recoltei de toamnă.

🪶🍂🌾 Sukkot starts today. Sukkot is a Jewish holiday that takes place five days after Yom Kippur. Sukkot remembers the harvest and the miraculous protection God provided for the children of Israel when they left Egypt. Sukkot is celebrated by living in a foliage-covered tabernacle (known as a sukkah) and taking the "Four Kinds" (arba minim), four unique varieties of plants.

🍋🌿 Sukkot has its roots in an ancient fall harvest holiday. It is known as "hag ha-asif", or "The Harvest Festival." Much of the holiday's imagery and ceremony is centred upon praising and thanking God for the accomplished harvest. The sukkah are the huts that farmers would dwell in during the last, holiday-like harvest day before the winter rains. As with other celebrations that may not have had Jewish beginnings, the Bible reinterpreted the event to give it a Jewish meaning. Sukkot therefore came to memorialise the Israelites' wanderings in the desert following the revelation at Mount Sinai, with the huts representing the temporary shelters that the Israelites lived in throughout those 40 years.

🏠🍎 Sukkot is the only Jewish festival whose date does not appear to commemorate a historical event. The Torah calls it "Chag HaAsif" (the Festival of Ingathering or Harvest Festival) and "Chag HaSukkot" (Feast of Tabernacles), each indicating a distinct reason for the event. Crops in Israel grow in the winter and are ready for harvest in late April. Some of them are left in the field to dry for several months before being harvested in the early fall. Chag HaAsif is a time to express gratitude for this blessing.

🌾🍇 The name Chag HaSukkot which refers to the temporary dwellings God built to shelter Israelites on their way out of Egypt (some say this refers to the miraculous clouds of glory that shielded them from the desert sun, while others say it refers to the tents in which they lived during their 40-year journey through the Sinai desert).
Chag Sameach!

A szukkák azok a kunyhók, ahol a földművesek a téli esők előtti utolsó ünnepi szüreti periódusban laktak.

✡️🛐 Today is the holiday of Yom Kippur. The fast day of Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) is the culmination of the Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe). This is the day on which God, according to tradition, seals the Books of Life and Death for the coming year. The day is dedicated to communal penance for sins done in the preceding year. According to Jewish tradition, on Rosh Hashana, God inscribes people's names either in the Book of Life or in the Book of Death, or in a third book that is neither of life nor of death. During the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, people have the chance to change their fate if they repent and humble themselves enough. Finally, the books are sealed on Yom Kippur, and people's fate is sealed. Yom Kippur is the most significant day in the Jewish calendar due to its character and associated ceremonies.

📜🕰️ During biblical times, there was already a rite for sin expiation. However, it was not until the Second Temple Period that Yom Kippur gained significance as a day of mourning and abstinence. By the Rabbinic Period, it had become the most important day in the Jewish liturgical calendar, a position it has kept to the present day.

🕍🕯️ Yom Kippur service is entirely centred in the synagogue. On Yom Kippur, it is traditional to wear a tallit, or prayer shawl, at all times in the synagogue; this is the only time of year when the tallit is worn in the evening. This day has more and longer services than any other in the Jewish calendar.

✡️🛐 Ma van Jom Kipur ünnepe. A Jom Kippur (Engesztelés napja) böjt napja a Yamim Noraim (Áhítat napjai) csúcspontja.

🕍🕯️ A Jom Kipur istentisztelet teljes egészében a zsinagógában zajlik.
