Today, we remember Mereuță on what would have been his 83rd birthday. It is a privilege for our gallery to represent the artist’s estate.

Together with our friends from Artwill artwill, we are preparing a new exhibition curated by Călin Dan, to offer a deeper insight into Mereuță’s artistic practice.

The exhibition will be accompanied by the catalogue on Mereuță published by the National Museum of Contemporary Art.

Further details to follow.

Maria Brîneț
Before I wake up
2023
Plaster& metal wire
50 x 30 xm

Maria Brîneț’s practice explores how memory and personal or collective experiences can take shape through objects and materials. In Before I wake up, the contrast between the softness suggested by the quilting and the hardness of the plaster makes the object seem both protective and vulnerable.

On view at Sector 1 Gallery until 10 October.

[…]”Thus, the exhibition is composed on one hand by artists whose practice uses the camera as a tool to see the analyzed object structurally rather than as a simple mimetic mechanical image producing an object, with the result becoming another processual layer that creates distance and analysis. Photographic works question the medium’s autonomy by relating to major stances of painting, such as pictoriality or the transcendence of the “mirror with memory,” towards the image as a window. Balanced by a number of artists whose work primarily focuses on the medium of painting, based on questions related to the inherently reductive power of photography, the emotional potential of the camera, the materials that capture light in a physical or chemical trace, or the optical perception issues that the photographic-based image places forward.”
