Drawing upon her own experience as an expatriate in the United States, the photograph explores the relationship between body and landscape through gestures of concealment, integration, and camouflage. The body attempts simultaneously to occupy space and disappear within it, transforming inhabitation from an acquired condition into an ongoing process of adaptation.

Night Time Tremors | 2013 – ongoing

"In this project I explore a unique city in transition. Kiruna, a small city north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden, faces an uncertain future – in danger of being swallowed by a giant iron ore mine. The city developed over the last century in direct response to the iron ore mining that is the primary source of income in the area. Now that very mining is causing the city’s collapse. Iron is extracted via underground explosions that cause the earth to tremor every night. Each blast results in cracks in the landscape, with the impact moving slowly but steadily towards the city. Efforts to move large parts of the city are in place. While this is a long process, normalcy in Kiruna continues on unsteady ground, both literally and figuratively." –

Night Time Tremors is part of Living Spaces I, an exhibition curate by about the spaces we inhabit and the ways in which they're shaped, transformed and experienced.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of the first chapter of Living Spaces. For a few hours, the exhibition was inhabited exactly as we had hoped: through conversations, lovely encounters, prolonged looking, and the occasional glass of wine.

A big shoutout to our partners and collaborators who made this exhibition happen! :)
