Next in line at Kulterra —> Fake Intimacy, Solo Show by Catalin Soto | 7 PM, June 25

The spectacle of commodity fetishism shapes the becoming of the world. Human existence there is nothing but a long, anxious wandering through the narcissistic market of artificial
encounters. Everywhere reigns the despotic freedom of money, and the human being, enslaved and torn apart by the democratic dictatorship of Having and appearing, ceaselessly consumes their own submission. Against this totalitarianism of false consciousness, we must turn our backs on the
staging of modern passivity in order to rediscover the true paths of critical thinking and practically raise the radical question of the authenticity of Being.

To rediscover Being is also to return to the Earth. Etymology reminds us that homo (man) and humus (earth/soil) share the same original root. Humility is this position of elevation close to the living soil, which alone allows true knowledge. It means humbly accepting the splendor of that which is priceless, against all accounting, political, and financial records that seek to carve up the living earth into plots of profitability.

To carry this struggle, this exhibition brings together a series of paintings in dialogue with textual, philosophical, and radical fragments. Far from art serving a simple message, this work
opens an agora where the artwork becomes a vital impetus (élan vital). Painting does not explain, it acts: through its plastic and visual power, it seeks to bring forth that which, within each of us, resists the reduction of the human being to mere exchange value. That which remains irreducible and alive.

Next in line at Kulterra —> Fake Intimacy, Solo Show by Catalin Soto | 7 PM, June 25

The gaze that Cătălin Mihociu-Soto casts, as a photographer, into one of the most intimate spaces of an artist, the studio, is not voyeuristic in nature. Rather than probing the creative act itself, however enticing it may be as a human experience, he stages the conditions for an encounter and an exchange of energies between the artist at work and the observer behind the camera.

Aware that his mere presence influences what unfolds before the lens, Cătălin Mihociu-Soto questions the notion of documentary authenticity, highlighting the ways in which both participants contribute to the emergence of the image. The result transcends the conventional relationship between author and subject, becoming a space of collaboration, dialogue, and reciprocal gazes, where intimacy is performed and shared among those gathered within the encounter.

Soto is no stranger to collaborative artistic practices. Fake Intimacy continues a direction already present in his artistic work, marking his third project of this kind, following his solo exhibition presented at Kulterra Gallery in 2025 and Cypherism, hosted at ETAJ Mahal Artist-run Space within the Combinatul Fondului Plastic complex in 2026.

The selection of Soto’s collaborators was shaped by both personal affinities and creative connections. The invited artists are figures who have influenced his trajectory and who come from distinct visual art disciplines: Andra Achim, Not Bob, Miruna Cojanu, Misha Diaconu, Macanache, Mara Malinovski, Liviu Mihai, Răzvan Neagoe, and Mihai Zgondoiu. Together, they represent a part of Soto’s artistic tribe, creating a diverse framework of encounters and dialogues that reflects the network of influences, affinities, and exchanges underpinning the project Creative Intimacy.

Filcǎi by Liviu Alexa explores the unexpected intersection between subcultural memory and artistic imagination, reinterpreting a traditional Transylvanian card game through a series of paintings that bring forward forgotten figures, hybrid characters, and layered narratives.

Rooted in history yet reimagined through a contemporary lens, the works reflect the artist’s gesture of preserving and transforming a fragile cultural fragment into a new visual language.

The exhibition remains on view until May 10 - we warmly invite you to visit before it closes.

The King of Commuters, whom I have honored with the acorn suit, is the canvas dedicated to all those who, in order to put bread on the table, spent decades shuttling between towns for work — sleeping or eating, playing cards and drinking on the train.

There is no irony in my canvas. The King of Commuters is our Shiva — Romania’s Shiva — with multiple arms and multiple legs, multiple coats and multiple thoughts inside a single body. His scepter is the salami he bites into with appetite, his chalice the beer bottle he pulls from with vigor, playing cards in one hand, coffee in the other, the one-leu plastic bag holding his factory lunch, the jar of mustard.

His mantle may be threadbare, but the tie salvages the dignity he still hopes for — because the commuter is not “the last of men.” He is simply a man who was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, working his life away between two trains, like a hamster unaware of its wheel. You might laugh at him, but you shouldn’t — because most of us are hamsters in our own lives, commuters who depart from between our mother’s legs and arrive at the final station of the earth.

There is still time to discover Filcǎi by Liviu Alexa.

On view through May 10, the exhibition revisits the imagery of a traditional Transylvanian card game through a contemporary painterly perspective, where folklore, memory, and fiction intersect.

We look forward to welcoming you during gallery opening hours.
