Mostafa Minawi invited audiences to reconsider the assumptions that empire and modernity were mutually exclusive. Drawing on his book, Losing Istanbul, Minawi unpacks how Arab imperial figures navigated power, identity and political transformation in the empire’s final decades.

في ، نتأمل لوحة “لعبة الشطرنج” (1896) للفنان النمساوي لودفيج دويتش ♟

رُسمت في باريس، واستلهمها الفنان من مشاهداته خلال رحلاته إلى القاهرة، لتقدّم رؤية أوروبية عن الحياة في الشرق الأوسط في القرن التاسع عشر.

بين زخارف المشربيات الخشبية، الأقمشة الغنية بالألوان، والبلاط الخزفي المرسوم، تتوسط اللوحة لعبة عريقة متجذّرة في تراث المنطقة. يُعتقد أن الشطرنج نشأ في الهند، وانتقل عبر فارس إلى العالم الإسلامي، ليصبح جزءاً من الحياة اليومية في الشرق.

ماذا تلاحظون في هذا المشهد؟ 💭

On , we look at 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑮𝒂𝒎𝒆 (1896) by Austrian Ludwig Deutsch. ♟

Created in Paris and inspired by sketches from his travels to Cairo, the painting offers a European perspective on Middle Eastern life in the 19th century.

Amid its detailed rendering of Mashrabiyyah woodwork, vibrant textiles, and painted ceramic tiles, the painting centers on a game deeply rooted in the region’s cultural history. Chess, believed to have originated in India and carried through Persia into the Islamic world, has long been part of everyday life in the Middle East.
