SIBYLLA
Reveries of Collective Walkers (Basel)

A glimpse into our June milestone project — dialogue’s first summer exhibition in Basel, during Art Basel week and part of the Art Basel VIP Programme.

Unfolding through the gardens and rooms of the Freie Musikschule, in the heart of Gellertpark, SIBYLLA was inspired by the figure of the oracle and by Maria Sibylla Merian, bringing together all participating artists, musicians, galleries, plants, and audiences in a living ecosystem.

Presenting a selection of works across several media — including performance, sculpture, ceramics, photography, drawing, and painting — the exhibition traced connections to plants, geography, mythology, botany, history, fire, vision, waves, hands, earth, leaves and feathers, trees, caves and sun.

Amélie Bouvier, Mike Bouchet, Carina Brandes, Gabriel Chaile, Francisca Carvalho, Priscila Fernandes, Michel François, Sara Graça, Tiago Mestre, Diogo Nogueira, Uriel Orlow, Giovanni Ozzola, Hugo de Almeida Pinho, Fernando Prats, Fabrice Samyn, Kathrin Wachter.

In Reveries of Collective Walkers, Uriel Orlow’s performance, the walkers activated the musicians, who appeared to blend into the plants. Gellertpark provided the perfect setting — and an unexpected natural acoustic quality — for these musical performances: camouflaged by nature, addressed to nature as an invitation to slow down, rewild, and listen.

The six musical acts brought together a repertoire inspired by nature and performed to nature, including works by Schubert / Ernst, Puccini, MacDowell, Ernst, and Tchaikovsky — from Erlkönig to Crisantemi, To a Wild Rose, Last Rose of Summer, and Valse des Fleurs.

Group exhibition curated by Sonia Taborda and Joerg Bader.

Music curated by Maria João Pires and Martin Masan.

With special thanks to Freie Musikschule Basel, Art Basel, Gellertpark, the Christoph Merian Stiftung, all participating artists, musicians, galleries, designer, walkers, students, friends, collectors, and everyone who joined us in Basel.

RADICAL GESTURES Acto I re-visita parte da obra fílmica experimental de Tatiana Macedo, após mais de 20 anos de actividade artística.

O projecto apresenta um novo conjunto de instalações vídeo em estreita relação com a arquitectura do Rialto6, numa experiência impossível de repetir.

Ao longo das 8 semanas de exposição, serão também programados screenings da sua produção fílmica, reunidos no programa ARTIST’S CINEMA: A CINEMA OF ONE’S OWN — numa clara alusão a Virgínia Wolf — reivindicando a possibilidade de um cinema de artista só seu.

A exposição percorre aspectos da sua obra que vão da imersão no museu, na ‘cidade proibida’ e nos arquivos ‘por vir’, através de uma linguagem transdisciplinar entre cinema, teatro, música, pintura, dança, arquitectura, fotografia, performance e antropologia.

O gesto e a pausa tornam-se actos de resistência crítica e sensível. Uma pausa não é um intervalo, mas uma acção que irrompe o absolutismo do silêncio — imagem som, duas faces da mesma moeda.

RADICAL GESTURES Act I re-visits part of Tatiana Macedo’s experimental filmic work, after more than 20 years of artistic activity.

The project presents a new set of video installations in close relation to the architecture of Rialto6, in an experience impossible to repeat.

Throughout the 8 weeks of the exhibition, screenings of her filmic production will be programmed as part of ARTIST’S CINEMA: A CINEMA OF ONE’S OWN — in a clear allusion to Virginia Woolf — claiming the possibility of an artist’s cinema of her own.

The exhibition traces aspects of her work from immersion in the museum, the ‘forbidden city’ and the archives ‘to come’, through a transdisciplinary language between cinema, theatre, music, painting, dance, architecture, photography, performance and anthropology.

Gesture and pause become acts of critical and sensitive resistance. A pause is not an interval, but an action that breaks through the absolutism of silence — image sound, two sides of the same coin.

Reveries of Collective Walkers (Basel)

A warm thank you to everyone who joined us at Gellertpark for the opening of SIBYLLA and for Uriel Orlow’s performance in the property of Christoph Merian Shiftung at the Freie Musikschule Basel.

With classical musicians performing for plants, we were transported closer to nature, as witnesses to a symbiosis between human and more-than-human forms of listening — extending the spirit of Maria Sibylla Merian through sound, attention, and collective presence.

We are excited to invite you to SIBYLLA, a group exhibition presented by dialogue × Freie Musikschule Basel at Gellertgut Park, as part of the Art Basel VIP Programme.

Taking its name from Maria Sibylla Merian, the pioneering female botanist whose life and work are deeply connected to Basel, SIBYLLA invokes the figure of the sibyl as both scientist and oracle.

The performance by Uriel Orlow unfolds in parallel with his presentation at the Giardini of La Biennale di Venezia. Developed in collaboration with Maria João Pires and Martin Masan, it takes place in the garden, where musicians perform with and for plants, activating a subtle dialogue between human and more-than-human forms of listening.
