📸 Dagmar van Weeghel at UNSEEN PHOTO 2026

Following its presentation in Lisbon, BLOOM by Dagmar van Weeghel now travels to the Netherlands, where it will be featured in the prestigious “The Past Present” section of UNSEEN PHOTO 2026, now part of Art Rotterdam. The artist will be represented by THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE at the fair, taking place from 26 to 29 March at Rotterdam Ahoy.

Curated by Hedy van Erp, this section offers a contemporary perspective on analogue photography up to the year 2000, bringing together artists who reactivate archives and historical techniques to restore depth and meaning to the past.

With BLOOM: Reclaiming Presence Through Botanical and Photographic Memory, Dagmar van Weeghel returns to the 19th century to question the foundations of the photographic archive. Developed over four years, the series brings together historical photographic processes, botanical practices, and floriography, reflecting on the absence of women of African descent in European visual history.

Using an original 1868 carte de visite camera, hand-made floral pigments, and anthotypes, the artist challenges photography’s claim to truth, proposing a reconfiguration of memory, image, and representation.

We would like to thank everyone who visited our booth at Cape Town Art Fair, where we presented Constellations of Listening — a curatorial selection bringing together works by Ana Malta, Barbara Wildenboer, Cássio Markowski, Ibrahim Bemba Kébé, Osvaldo Ferreira, and Sanjo Lawal.

Dedicated to the theme of Listen, this edition of the fair offered us the opportunity to share six distinct artistic practices which, while formally diverse, converge in a sensitive and critical reflection on memory, ancestry, interconnection, and the subtle resonances that shape contemporary experience.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the artists, and to all the visitors, collectors, curators, and professionals who accompanied us and contributed to the success of this presentation. Your presence and dialogue were invaluable.

For those who were unable to attend, or who wish to revisit the works, the project remains accessible through our Viewing Room.

We are proud to be part of Cape Town Art Fair 2026, presenting our curatorial project at Booth B9 (Main Section) from 20–22 February at the CTICC.

This video offers a glimpse into THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE booth — conceived as a space of expanded listening, where material, colour, texture, and gesture invite a slower, more attentive mode of engagement. Bringing together works by Ana Malta, Barbara Wildenboer, Cássio Markowski, Ibrahim Bemba Kébé, Osvaldo Ferreira, and Sanjo Lawal, the presentation unfolds as a constellation of voices that resonate across geographies and generations.

Rooted in the notion of listening as an ethical and embodied act, the project explores memory, ancestry, interconnection, and the subtle vibrations that shape contemporary experience. Each work contributes to a shared dialogue in which tradition meets experimentation, and where the visual becomes a site of resonance rather than mere display.

🎥 BLOOM – Behind the Scenes
Step into the world of BLOOM – The Act of Remembrance, the solo exhibition by acclaimed Dutch photographer Dagmar van Weeghel, opening today at 6:30 PM at THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE, Lisbon — with the artist present.

The result of four years of research, this series offers a reflection on the historical scarcity of representations of women of African descent within European visual archives, through the use of 19th-century photographic techniques, botanical practices, and the language of flowers (floriography).

The exhibition brings together contemporary portraits, platinum–palladium prints, anthotypes, and hand-tinted photographs using natural pigments made by the artist from foraged wildflowers.

📆 On view until 18 April

We are delighted to announce the opening of BLOOM, a solo exhibition by acclaimed Dutch photographer Dagmar van Weeghel, at THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE.

Premiering in Lisbon, BLOOM offers a poetic and critical reflection on the historical visibility and representation of African women, through 19th-century photographic techniques, botanical practices, and overlooked visual archives.

Several works are hand-tinted using natural pigments created by the artist from foraged wildflowers — weaving together ecology, affect, and the politics of representation.
