Paul Demullier – A French POW at Stalag VIII A

French soldier Paul Demullier was imprisoned at Stalag VIII A Görlitz, from where he was assigned to several labour battalions across Silesia. His son Christophe spent years trying to uncover his father’s story — despite Paul’s silence about his time as a POW and forced labourer.

Through photos, anecdotes, and archive documents, Christophe reconstructed his father’s path: from Frontstalag 203 in Le Mans to Görlitz, Hirschberg (Jelenia Góra), and Maiwaldau (Maciejowa), where Paul worked as a baker between 1942 and 1943.

In visiting these places, Christophe retraced his father’s steps and gave new life to a story once untold — showing how the history of Stalag VIII A still connects families across Europe today.

The field of public history is a leading aspect of our project. The German historian Felix Ackermann shared the gist of this exciting field with us. Under his guidance we visited the exhibition “Görlitz im Nationalsozialismus” currently featured in the Görlitz Kulturhistorisches Museum. We analysed the exhibition concerning its layout, its storytelling and its overall message. We concluded the day with a lively discussion comparing the different approaches of museums in Ukraine, Poland and Germany.

Our project „One History – Many Stories. Summer School on WWII Forced Labour and Public History” has kicked off with our group of young people from Ukraine, Poland and Germany coming together in GörlitZgorzelec. Leading up to our project „One History – Many Stories. Summer School on WWII Forced Labour and Public History” we had the opportunity to learn how to conduct interviews with contemporary witnesses and working with different historical archives. The main idea is for every participant to try and research his or her own family history concerning the topic of WWII forced labour and its victims. The workshops were lead online by historians Anna Jatchenko and Andrij Ucatch from Після тиші – After Silence, our Lviv based partners.
