The icons I paint find their way into many different homes, not necessarily religious ones. For some people tradition and faith matter most, for others it is primarily the aesthetics and the way a work affects a space. The reasons vary greatly. An icon in a home is a point where the eye naturally pauses. Everyone brings their own meaning to it.

Ikony, które maluję, trafiają do różnych domów, niekoniecznie religijnych. Dla części osób ważna jest tradycja i wiara, dla innych przede wszystkim estetyka i to, jak praca oddziałuje na przestrzeń. Motywy bywają bardzo różne. Ikona w domu to punkt, przy którym wzrok naturalnie się zatrzymuje. Każdy nadaje jej własne znaczenie.

Gesso is a mixture of chalk, water and rabbit skin glue. I apply it in layers: the first ones with a hot brush, so they soak deep into the fabric, the subsequent ones with a silicone spreader, once it has cooled and thickened. There are over a dozen layers in total. The result is a smooth, silky surface on which egg tempera behaves completely differently than on canvas or paper.

Lewkas to mieszanina kredy, wody i kleju króliczego. Nakładam go warstwami: pierwsze gorącym pędzlem, żeby głęboko przesiąkły tkaninę, kolejne silikonową formą, gdy ostygnie i zgęstnieje. Warstw jest kilkanaście. Efekt końcowy to gładka, jedwabista powierzchnia, na której tempera jajowa zachowuje się zupełnie inaczej niż na płótnie czy papierze.

Painting with watercolour gives a lot of freedom. I use it to explore new compositional and colour solutions that I later apply in my icons. I particularly love granulating watercolours, which create unique effects as they dry, little cosmos.

Malowanie akwarelą daje dużo swobody. Używam jej do poszukiwania nowych rozwiązań kompozycyjnych i kolorystycznych, które potem wykorzystuję w ikonach. Szczególnie lubię akwarele granulujące, które przy wysychaniu tworzą niepowtarzalne efekty, małe kosmosy.

After the first sketches comes the moment I love most. I sit down with watercolors and develop different color versions – with watercolor you can paint quickly and experiment freely.
This time I’m painting three variants of the same composition, each with a different shade of gold: warm, intermediate, and cool. The shade of gold changes everything – the same image in warm glow says something different than in cool light.
I’m considering creating all three icons, where each would tell the same story in a different mood.

Po pierwszych szkicach przychodzi moment, który uwielbiam najbardziej. Siadam z akwarelami i rozwijam różne wersje kolorystyczne – akwarelą można szybko malować i swobodnie eksperymentować.
Tym razem maluję trzy warianty tej samej kompozycji, każdy z innym odcieniem złota: ciepłym, pośrednim i chłodnym. Odcień złota zmienia wszystko – ten sam obraz w ciepłym blasku mówi co innego niż w chłodnym świetle.
Zastanawiam się nad stworzeniem wszystkich trzech ikon, gdzie każda opowiadałaby tę samą historię w innym nastroju.
