The Silence of the “Parrot”
A 1947 cartoon still speaks volumes about the state of press freedom today.
“Why doesn’t the parrot ever talk?”
“How can he talk with a blanket over him?”
This simple exchange carries a powerful metaphor. The parrot symbolizes the media—meant to speak, question, and echo the truth. The blanket represents censorship, fear, and control.
When the press is silenced, the consequences are profound:

Accountability fades — Power goes unchecked when no one is allowed to question it.

Truth is obscured — A society deprived of information cannot make informed decisions.

Transparency disappears — Silence creates space for manipulation and misinformation.

A free press is not a luxury; it is the backbone of any functioning democracy.
When the “parrot” is covered, it’s not just the media that suffers—it’s the public’s right to know.

آج"ننھا" والے ممتاز کارٹونسٹ انور علی کا یومِ ولادت ہے

وہ 18 اپریل 1922 کو لدھیانہ میں پیدا ہوئے۔
ابتدا میں انہوں نے مختلف اخبارات میں اکا دکا کارٹون بنائے۔1947 میں ’’پاکستان ٹائمز‘‘ جاری ہوا تو اس سے منسلک ہوگئے۔ پہلے ’چودھری‘ کے کردار کے ساتھ سیاسی کارٹون بناتے رہے۔
1952 میں ’’ننھا‘‘ کا کردار تخلیق کر کے پاکٹ کارٹون کا سلسلہ شروع کیا۔ پاکستان ٹائمز کے نامور صحافی حمید شیخ ’’سول اینڈ ملٹری گزٹ‘‘ کے ایڈیٹر بنے تو انور علی ان کے ساتھہ چلے گئے۔ حمید شیخ کو دل کا عارضہ ہوا تو گزٹ کے مالکان نے انہیں فارغ کر دیا، جس پر انور علی بھی اسی وقت استعفیٰ دے کر پاکستان ٹائمز چلے آئے۔ پھر اسی کیلئے کارٹون بناتے رہے. ریٹائرمنٹ کے بعد بھی یہ سلسلہ جاری رکھا۔
انور علی نے افسانے پنجابی میں لکھے۔ جن کے دو مجموعے ’کالیاں اٹاں کالے روڑ‘ اور ’نوری‘ شائع ہوئے۔
انور علی کی آپ بیتی ’گواچیاں گلاں ‘ پنجابی میں عمدہ ترین آپ بیتیوں میں سے ایک ہے۔ ’’ گواچیاں گلاں ‘‘ کا ترجمہ ریاض احمد نے اردو میں کیا تھا جو "بھولی باتیں " کے عنوان سے "سویرا" (71) میں شائع ہوا.انور علی کا ناولٹ " نوری " بھی ریاض احمد کے قلم سے ترجمہ ہو کر "سویرا" میں چھپ چکا ہے ۔

انور علی 27 نومبر 2004 کو رخصت ہوئے۔ مشہور واٹر کلر پینٹر اور این سی اے کے سابق استاد ڈاکٹر اعجاز انور ان کے صاحبزادے ہیں۔ کہا جاتا ہے کہ ننھا وہی ہیں۔
