“Heritage of Swat Valley” Preservation of Buddhist Rock Reliefs of Swat Valley Project arrived at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge on 18th April as part of the Silk Road Sound & Stories event at the Cambridge Festival 2026. The exhibition showcased documented Buddhist rock reliefs through an immersive experience, bringing together the living heritage of Swat Valley its culinary culture, crafts, and textiles into a vibrant, multi-sensory narrative. Supported by the British Council Cultural Protection Fund, the project is implemented by the Italian Archaeological Mission for Pakistan, Heritage Management Organisation Greece, the Directorate General of Archaeology and Museums KPK, and Essanoor Associates. The exhibition enabled audiences to experience and connect Swat’s rich cultural heritage with the wider traditions of the Hindu Kush and Himalayan regions highlighting its role as a vital node in the ancient Silk Road networks. A powerful reminder that heritage is not only preserved it is lived, shared, and continuously reimagined.

The Swat Valley, known in early Buddhist sources as Uddiyāna and Orgyan, is shaped by fertile alluvial soil, abundant groundwater, and a climate that has long supported subsistence farming alongside local markets. Systems of both food and healing function here as a living archive: linking timelines, eras, religions, and people through cultivation, cooking, and care.

So excited to share how we experienced this land together as an artist, a chef, an anthropologist, and a photographer through food, memory, and making.

Before COP30 concludes, celebrate the community spirit championing Swat Valley’s ancient Buddhist rock carvings 🌟

Despite surviving for over a millenium, these carvings face the risk of disappearing due to climate change and urbanisation in Pakistan.

However, efforts from Essanoor Associates and local partners have seen to immediate first aid conservation for the most at-risk sites, as well as building long-term resilience via

On 28 & 30 August 2025, our team organized a two-day workshop on First Aid Conservation Practices for Rock Carvings under the British Council Cultural Protection Fund.

Participants from DOAM Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Swat Museum, Hunerkada, and local conservators, gained hands-on experience in documentation, photogrammetry, cleaning, and stabilization of Buddhist stone heritage.

Expert trainers Marco Pinelli and Alessandra from the Italian Archaeological Mission led the sessions, combining theoretical insights with practical conservation work on stelae and artifacts. To encourage inclusiveness, the instructions were translated into Urdu and Pashto by the project team.

The training concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony, recognition of participants, and strengthened collaborations for the future protection of Swat’s unique Buddhist rock reliefs.

On 16 August 2025, the British Council Library in Lahore, in collaboration with the project “Preservation of the Buddhist Rock Reliefs in the Swat Valley Digital Documentation, First-Aid Conservation, and Climate Change Adaptation,” hosted an engaging session for school students from the Lahore region. This initiative is part of the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund (CPF) project, carried out in partnership with the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), the Italian Archaeological Mission to Pakistan, The Heritage Management Organization (Greece), and Essanoor Associates.
The session aimed to ignite curiosity and foster awareness about Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage particularly the Gandhara civilization among young minds. Through creative, hands-on activities, students explored the themes of heritage preservation, historical appreciation, and climate change adaptation. Children enthusiastically participated in art-based activities, such as designing tote bags inspired by Gandharan motifs and sculpting their own clay “heritage pieces,” which they dedicated to their peers and the British Council Library. Their excitement and curiosity lit up the space, with many expressing a desire to have had more time and some even voicing hopes of one day visiting Swat to experience its ancient wonders firsthand.
As one guardian teacher movingly remarked, “It felt as if the team had brought Swat and its heritage with them.” This memorable session not only connected young students with diverse cultural heritage but also encouraged them to think creatively about preserving heritage in a changing world.
