El Museo de Zamboanga and DepEd Collaborate for the Preservation of Gabaldon Buildings

El Museo de Zamboanga recently held a meeting with the Department of Education (DepEd) and representatives of schools with identified Gabaldon Buildings in Zamboanga City.

The meeting was conducted in support of the LGU's plan to install historical markers at identified historical sites in Zamboanga City. As part of the documentation process, DepEd gathered school principals and representatives to share important historical information and provide updates on the current condition of their respective Gabaldon school buildings.

The information gathered will contribute to the documentation and recognition of these historic educational structures and support the preparation of appropriate historical markers highlighting their significance to the history and heritage of Zamboanga City.

Participating school representatives were:

• Myrna B. Cabanes – Zamboanga Central School
• Eleuteria A. Samson – Mercedes Central School
• Syria S. Dorham – Mampang Elementary School
• Roy T. Bansalan – Culianan Learning Center

El Museo de Zamboanga extends its sincere appreciation to Ms. Jane M. Dela Torre, LCCAH Representative from DepEd; Ms. Tricia Corrales, Planning Officer; and Engr. Benjamin Saligan for their valuable support and assistance in making this meeting possible.

Through the cooperation of the LGU, DepEd, school administrators, heritage advocates, and other stakeholders, we continue to take meaningful steps toward the documentation, recognition, and preservation of Zamboanga City's valuable Gabaldon heritage.

BUREAU OF CORRECTIONS VISITS EL MUSEO DE ZAMBOANGA FOR SAN RAMON PRISON RESEARCH

Representatives of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) visited El Museo de Zamboanga to conduct research on the history and development of San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm, one of the significant historical institutions associated with Zamboanga City.

As part of the research activity, the BuCor team interviewed Ar. Ildefonso F. Torres Jr., Museum Curator I, who shared historical information and insights relevant to the study of San Ramon Prison.

The visit underscores the importance of institutional collaboration in documenting historical narratives and preserving the cultural heritage of Zamboanga City.

El Museo de Zamboanga remains committed to facilitating research and providing historical resources that contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the city’s heritage.

El Museo de Zamboanga proudly celebrates the successful completion of the internship of the Bachelor of Fine Arts – Industrial Design students from Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University (ZPPSU).

Their internship was more than a learning experience—it was a meaningful collaboration that helped bring our museum exhibits to life. Through their creativity and dedication, they designed digital exhibit graphics, produced two-dimensional exhibit texts and installations, enhanced the diorama elements and paintings of Fort Pilar and General Vicente Alvarez, and designed and constructed the Philippine Eagle Diorama.

Every brushstroke, design, and installation they created has become part of the museum experience, inspiring visitors to appreciate the history, culture, and natural heritage of Zamboanga.

📚 ECHO SESSION: WRITING LOCAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE

El Museo de Zamboanga conducted an Echo Session on Writing Local History and Heritage on July 29, 2026, sharing key insights and learnings from the lecture attended on July 20, 2026.

The session explored historical writing styles, research methods, source evaluation, manuscript writing, critique, and publication, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based and responsible approaches to documenting local history.

These learnings will contribute to our continuing work in cultural mapping, heritage documentation, museum collections, research, and the preservation of Zamboanga City's rich history and cultural heritage.

Regular museum operations will resume on June 17, 2026 (Wednesday).
