Journey through the years of Ticao’s enduring legacy as you view carefully curated photographs, historical artifacts, archival panels, and narratives that honor the island’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

The exhibit will remain open until December 18, 2026. We warmly invite you to bring your family and friends to take part in this meaningful celebration of our shared past and collective identity. Special arrangements can be made if there are groups wishing to visit outside of these hours.

Noong Agosto 1, 1898, pinamunuan ni Pangulong Emilio Aguinaldo ang "Pagpupulong sa Bacoor" sa Bacoor, Cavite, na siyang kabisera ng Pamahalaang Rebolusyonaryo noon.

Sa payo ni Apolinario Mabini, nagtipon ang mahigit 200 lokal na pinuno mula sa 16 na lalawigang malaya na sa Espanya upang lagdaan ang isang bagong Acta ng Kasarinlan.

Ang dokumentong ito, na binuo rin ni Mabini upang iwasto ang mga pagkukulang ng deklarasyon noong Hunyo 12, 1898, ang opisyal na pinagtibay ng Kongreso ng Malolos sa huling bahagi ng taong iyon.

Idinedeklara ng Batas Republika Blg. 12073 ang ika-1 ng Agosto bilang isang special working holiday taun-taon. Ipinag-uutos din nito sa mga pambansang ahensyang pangkultura na itaguyod at ituro ang pangkasaysayang kahalagahan ng araw na ito.

Three hundred years ago, on July 23, 1726, the seas around Ticao were unforgiving. Amid wind, rain, and towering waves, the Spanish galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos was driven ashore, forever weaving its story into the history of our island.

Three centuries later, on July 23, 2026, the skies once again opened—not with the fury of that long-ago storm, but with a gentle rain that seemed to bless our gathering. For a moment, the weather became a quiet reminder of the day that changed Ticao’s story.

Beneath those rain-filled skies, government officials, teachers, students, heritage advocates, and members of the community gathered at the Garita in San Jacinto for the unveiling of the historic galleon anchor. Once buried in silence and known to only a few, the anchor now stands as a powerful witness to our maritime past and a symbol of a community reclaiming and sharing its own history.

Our deepest appreciation goes to Vice Mayor Leny Altiche Arcenas for her heartfelt message, to Wilma Almojuela, Principal of San Jacinto National High School, for inspiring the next generation by bringing her students to become part of this historic occasion, and to Rhodiebert Nuevo for sharing a vision of how San Jacinto’s heritage can shape its future through tourism. Your support reminds us that preserving history is a shared responsibility.

The unveiling of an anchor is more than the unveiling of an artifact. It is the lifting of a forgotten story from the depths of time. It is an invitation for every Tigaonon to remember, to ask questions, and to take pride in a heritage that belongs to us all.

This is only the beginning.

May the story of the Santo Cristo de Burgos continue to sail beyond our shores. May it inspire curiosity, strengthen our identity, and remind every generation that Ticao has a story worth telling—and worth preserving.

A CALL TO REMEMBER. A CALL TO CELEBRATE.
As we commemorate the 300th Anniversary of the events of 23 July 1726 related to Santo Cristo de Burgos, the Ticao Tricentenario 2026 Working Committee warmly invites the people of Ticao, our balikbayan, friends, and visitors to the Ceremonial Unveiling of the Historic Marker and Galleon Anchor Monument at the Garita, Port Area, San Jacinto.

At the heart of this monument is the historic galleon anchor discovered in Ticao waters in the 1970s—a remarkable relic that connects our island to one of the defining chapters of Philippine maritime history – the Manila-Mexico Galleon Trade lasting 250 years. Preserved for generations, it now stands as a symbol of Ticao’s enduring place in the story of the Pacific and the Manila–Acapulco Galleon Trade.
On this historic occasion, we gather not only to unveil a monument, but to honor the memory of those whose lives were shaped by the sea, to celebrate the resilience and identity of our island, and to reaffirm our commitment to preserving Ticao’s rich cultural and historical legacy for future generations.

Let this marker stand as a lasting reminder that the history of Ticao is a story worth remembering, protecting, and sharing with the world.

On that fateful and storm-tossed day of July 23, 1726, the Spanish Galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos ran aground off the coast of Ticao, in Ysla de Ticao, Masbate. Amid fear, loss, and uncertainty, one sacred treasure was saved from the sea: the icon of the Santo Cristo de Burgos. For the faithful, its preservation was not merely an event of history, but a sign of God’s mercy and abiding presence among His people.

In thanksgiving for this grace, the icon was enthroned and venerated as the patron of the island. Through the centuries, archival records and oral traditions have carried this memory, but more deeply, it has lived in the hearts of the Tigaonons. From the sorrow of a maritime disaster, faith took root; from the waves of trial, devotion blossomed; and from that sacred remembrance, generations have drawn strength, hope, and consolation.

Therefore, on July 23, 2026, as we mark the 300th anniversary of this providential event, we remember not simply the tragedy of the galleon running aground, but the blessings and graces that flowed from it. With grateful hearts, we honor the Santo Cristo de Burgos, asking that the same faith which sustained our forebears may continue to guide, protect, and unite the people of Ticao for generations to come.
