The last day of OMOCHA: Japanese Toys Today at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila ended with an insightful talk in Custom Collabs: Creative Partnerships Through Toys. Filipino toy designer, Quiccs shared about his beginnings and triumphs in the local and international toy scene, as well as how it has opened opportunities for collaboration with different industries. Attendees ranged from collectors, hobbyists and even aspiring toy designers who took part in an engaging discussion on the appeal of Japanese toys, the characteristics of the local toy community, and what’s next in the Philippine toy scene.

What happens when you look at artworks from different exhibitions side by side?

In between her invigilation duties, our intern Dara Mateo took a closer look at Traverse: Creativity in Motion, Behind the Lens, and the recently concluded The Power of Engagement—and spotted unexpected threads connecting works across all three exhibitions.

Did you notice these parallels during your visit?

Calling all photographers, photography enthusiasts, and journalists!

Join us for a panel discussion exploring the creative journeys and impactful work of the photojournalists featured in the exhibition. Through their experiences, the conversation will examine how photography captures the complexities of human life—and brings stories of resilience, struggle, and triumph to light.
The discussion will also highlight the role of photojournalism in documenting Filipino accomplishments and shaping our national narratives.

F. Sionil Jose’s work will be presented by his son, conservator Eddie Jose, while Romeo Gacad’s work will be presented by his daughter, UP Diliman Assistant Professor Sabrina Gacad.

When you look at a work of art, what do you see?

Actor, dancer, and singer Joao Constancia recently visited the Museum, and we were curious to know which artwork caught his eye. He chose 𝘈𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘨𝘢 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘕𝘢𝘪𝘸𝘢𝘯 by Juan Miro P. Magbuhos, a semi-finalist from the MADE competition, currently featured in Traverse: Creativity in Motion.

The artwork speaks of loss—the absence left behind by someone we love. But Joao saw something quite different.

“At first, I was drawn to the person in the middle because it was a standout detail. Then, when I looked at the artwork, I noticed how the figure is surrounded by so many people. There is this feeling of joining the people and being part of something. For some reason, yung pagiging surrounded by people makes me feel at home.”

What began as an artwork about absence became, for Joao, a reflection on belonging, connection, and feeling at home.

And perhaps that is one of the beautiful things about art: the meaning doesn't always end with the artist. The same work can evoke different feelings, memories, and interpretations in each person who encounters it.

Come visit Traverse: Creativity in Motion and discover the artwork that speaks to you.

The exhibition is on view until 18 October 2026. FREE ADMISSION to this exhibition, with guided tours (limited to 30 people per slot) every 2:00 PM from Tuesday to Friday.

[RECAP] Series 3 of our Woodcut Printing Workshop has wrapped!

This series explored Multi-Plate Color Woodcut, facilitated by Ambie Abaño, with assistance from Jone Sibugan and Danna Espinosa. Participants learned how to create colorful prints using multiple woodblocks, layering different colors to build a single image—a technique famously used in Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Congratulations to all our participants! We’re thrilled to see how your prints came to life.

Our workshop series concludes with Line Etching on Copper Plate, happening on November 14, 21, 28, and December 5, 2026, from 9AM–4 PM.

For details, contact our Education Officer at [email protected].
