There is a kind of flourishing that does not care for spectacle, never rushing in or blooming flamboyantly on cue. It lingers, tests the air, and explores the edges of where it is, and with the proper conditions, reaches beyond its comfort zone. In Grow, Slow, Still, Justina Redillas leans into this softer tempo of healing and becoming, where change happens in increments so small you almost miss them, until suddenly you don’t.

Each piece carries the name of an organism that knows how to live wherever it lands: Redillas cleverly pairs specific botanical names with human-like emotional or physical states, suggesting attachment, resilience, and silence surrounding images of devotion. -Kaye O’yek

My Father’s House Has Many Rooms

On the concept behind the exhibition, the artist writes:

“In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”

When Jesus said those words it was to assure mortal man of salvation beyond this lifetime. But to me it gave me a vision of a confusing labyrinth with many rooms that reflect the life here and not the hereafter.

I approached the artworks in this exhibit as an allegory to our individual journeys in this world and our striving to find a place in it. The alcoves represent the many options/pathways we have in life while the wings represent the way we look for a spot to perch on, in which we can thrive or just to take a rest.

We are brought here without a handbook and expected to navigate life as best as we can. All we can hope for is wherever we land it would feel like a room that is made for us.
