In her latest solo exhibition, Drawn Out, RC Caringal highlights an artform intimate and precious enough to be worn on the body: the tattoo. The commitment entailed by permanent ink on one’s skin is no small matter. It is, in a sense, a commitment to the idea that the tattoo represents: the name of a loved one, a dagger bearing a likeness on its blade, a clock perhaps marking the passage of time. These images, once inscribed, become part of the body—and consequently, part of the self.

As in her previous works, Caringal presents the body up close, rendered in her remarkable impasto technique that evokes the terrain, texture, and imperfections of human skin. The body itself is her principal subject. But the body is uniquely personal, especially when adorned with tattoos. It becomes another form of ownership over our mortal form: a declaration that we have some agency over the imbrications, images, and meanings we choose to place upon it.

Instead, it begins another routine: waiting in long lines for public transportation, enduring the commute home, walking long distances, or, for the fortunate few, making the journey on a bicycle. In Alas Singko, Mark Laza turns his attention to this familiar hour, examining what it reveals about labor and the lives that continue beyond the workplace.

In her new exhibition, visual artist Angelica So begins with the end in mind.

From a young age, we are taught that we just have to go to school, be a good person, work hard, and life will reward us with a good life. Yet there is no such thing as a simple thing. We have different intelligences, which cookie-cutter schools rarely get to nurture (sometimes deliberately ignore) and address promptly and properly. We can be the most mindful, most considerate person, but can still fall victim to the countless scams perpetrated every day — sometimes by our very relatives and friends. We can be the most dedicated, the most hardworking employees and still be the first out when a business decision to save money is necessary. We can all be at a safe, comfortable place in life one moment, and be falling 13,000 feet into the unknown the next. Hope is not lost, it is never lost as long as we are alive.

The paintings in this exhibition are built like stage sets. Wooden trees stand in for forests. Painted windows open onto invented landscapes. Clouds, books, chairs, and fragments of architecture clearly occupy constructed spaces rather than real ones. Some bear the marks of use, as though they have already lived through several stories before this one. Their artificiality is intentional.
