🇵🇭 NINOY AQUINO DAY | August 21

Today, we remember Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.—not simply as a political figure, but as a Filipino who chose to return home despite knowing the dangers that awaited him.

On August 21, 1983, Ninoy returned to the Philippines after years in exile. He knew that his return could mean another long imprisonment—or even death. As he stepped off the plane at Manila International Airport, soldiers escorted him down the stairs. Before he could even reach the tarmac, he was shot and killed. He was only 48 years old.

His final journey became a turning point in our nation’s history.

At Espazio, where we believe that preserving history helps us understand who we are, we remember Ninoy’s courage and the price that was paid for the freedoms we enjoy today.

May we never forget that democracy, freedom, and good governance are not privileges to be taken for granted. They are responsibilities we must protect and pass on to the next generation.

Today, let us remember.
Let us learn from history.
And let us continue to love our country by doing our part.

Artifact Spotlight: The Konishiroku Pearlette (c. 1920s–1930s)

Before digital sensors and smartphones, capturing a moment required mechanical precision and timeless craftsmanship.

Featured in our collection today is the Pearlette, produced by Konishiroku (the pioneer manufacturer that later became Konica). As one of Japan’s earliest mass-produced folding cameras, the Pearlette made photography accessible to everyday families, marking a monumental shift in how stories and memories were preserved.

Featuring collapsible bellows, a signature wire-frame finder, and an 'Echo' shutter, this camera stands as a silent witness to the dawn of modern photographic history.
