𝗜𝗧’𝗦 𝗔 𝗪𝗥𝗔𝗣!
The curtains have officially closed on the third episode of the Plotting History Series!
Yesterday’s lecture, “𝙁𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙚 𝘼𝙜𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙤, 𝙂𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙤 𝘼𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙊𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙤 𝘿𝙞𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝘿𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘,” took us beyond the battlefield and into the world of diplomacy—highlighting the Filipinos who worked to make the Philippine nation known and recognized on the international stage.
Through the insightful discussion of 𝗠𝗿. Eufemio Agbayani III, Historic Sites Development Officer II of the NHCP, we learned more about 𝘍𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘦 𝘈𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘰, 𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘰 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘴 who represented Philippine interests in Japan, France, Germany, and Spain. Their missions abroad were not simply diplomatic visits; they were part of a larger effort to assert the Philippines’ sovereignty and identity as a nation and to seek recognition from the international community.
The lecture also emphasized an important question in understanding nationhood: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦? Beyond having a population, territory, and government, a nation’s sovereignty and recognition by other states are crucial to establishing its place in the international community. For the Philippines, emerging from centuries of Spanish colonial rule, gaining that recognition was itself a significant part of the struggle for nationhood.
