Nestled in the heart of Sibonga,Cebu stands a proud and regal century-old house called the Balai Ortiz. Today. And of course, eating at Heritage Cafe is a must!

It housed the family of Santos Ortiz and Bernarda Diez and their 7 offspring. It started off as a medium-sized, two-floor dwelling made of all wood with nipa roofing, not the typical bahay-na-bato where cut coral stones wall the ground floor, wood makes up the upper floor and roofed with clay tiles. The first floor was used for storing farming tools and main produce such as copra, corn, tobacco an

d a variety of fruits. The house later on went through some renovations such that it now has a tall roof of galvanized iron, the iconic concrete staircase and a concrete stair landing called caida or receiving room. The living area is spacious and grand, proof that the family spent most of their time in it and because of Santos Ortiz's government position, they would host parties and celebrations as well. The windows are wide, both for ventilation and to provide a good view to the family when processions and parades passed through the streets. Balai Ortiz serves as a museum that showcases the family's collection of inherited antiques, artifacts, photos and many more interesting items. The lower floor has been converted to Heritage Cafe, a restaurant/cafe that caters to local folk and foreign tourists, delighting them with Filipino specialties such as Ginataang Monggo, Pork Humba & Special Halo-Halo. If you happen to go to Simala Shrine or see the whale sharks at Oslob, or go further south to Argao, then make sure you drop by Balai Ortiz to witness century old history being recorded and lovingly restored.
