NWU Laoag City & DLSU Dasmariñas, Cavite Forge Three-Year Partnership Across All Academic Fields

Since 2012, De La Salle University–Dasmariñas has been visiting the Northwestern University Ecological Park & Botanic Gardens as part of its Plant Systematics field course.

It is inspiring to revive and strengthen this long-standing connection through a three-year partnership covering various academic fields. This collaboration opens opportunities for innovative programs, academic exchange, field-based learning, and joint research—further enriching the intercollegiate experience of students, faculty, and the research community.

For two decades, the Garden Director and Curator has dedicated his life to transforming a vision into reality—turning the Northwestern University Ecological Park & Botanic Gardens (NUEBG) into a living center for plant conservation, botanical research, ecological education, and biodiversity stewardship.

From humble beginnings to a thriving botanical collection and a recognized center for conservation, the journey has been rooted in passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to nature.

There were lot of Cultivars developed by the University of the Philippines Los Baños – Institute of Plant Breeding (UPLB-IPB), Dona Aurora, Dona Luz, Dona Eva etc. these remarkable Mussaendas showcases immense horticultural potentials and one of the Philippines’ most beautiful native plant groups.

At the Northwestern University Ecological Park and Botanic Gardens (NUEBG), we celebrate and promote the extraordinary diversity of Philippine flora—from wild native species to carefully developed cultivars with significant ornamental, educational, and research value.

NUEBG is home to approximately 3,000++ plant species, maintained through ex situ conservation as a living repository for research, education, biodiversity conservation, and horticultural development. Beyond preserving plants, the garden serves as a bridge between scientific research and the public, allowing visitors to appreciate the remarkable beauty and diversity of Philippine flora.

The Mussaenda collection is a testament to how science, horticulture, and conservation can work together—transforming our rich botanical heritage into living collections that can inspire appreciation, support research, and contribute to the long-term conservation of Philippine plant diversity.
