Gaze into the cosmos resting within the subtle curves of ceramic art. The National Museum of the Philippines - Dumaguete cordially invites you to witness the 𝗧𝗲𝗶𝘇𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝘇𝘂𝗸𝗶 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗼𝘀𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝘄𝗹.

Marking the 2026 Japan–Philippines Friendship Year and 70 years of normalized diplomatic relations between our nations, this special exhibition presents ceramic works born from decades of reflection and artistry by Japanese master ceramist 𝗧𝗲𝗶𝘇𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝘇𝘂𝗸𝗶. His process remains rooted in the lessons and memories from his volunteer service in Negros Oriental in 1997 through the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) program under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

This event comes to life through a collaborative partnership of the National Museum of the Philippines - Dumaguete with the City Government of Dumaguete, DTI Negros Oriental, DOST Negros Island Region, Japan International Cooperation Agency - Philippines Office, and the Provincial Government of Negros Oriental.

𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗢 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗡

According to Kaufmann’s Visayan-English Dictionary, palahangín-hangínan refers to a place in the open air for taking fresh air, such as a balcony, garden, park, open veranda, or courtyard.

At the National Museum of the Philippines - Iloilo, the Garden Deck is one of the building’s newer spaces. The historic Old Prison of Iloilo originally had no second floor or garden deck; these were introduced as part of its retrofitting for adaptive reuse as a museum. The Province of Iloilo funded the retrofitting, with the design led by the late Guillermo H. Hisancha, former president of the United Architects of the Philippines.

Today, the Garden Deck offers visitors an open-air space within a historic building. It is an example of how museums can thoughtfully combine heritage conservation with contemporary spaces for public use. This transformation reflects the spirit of Museums and Galleries Month, where the museum itself becomes part of what we explore, learn from, and appreciate.

SLOW DOWN, LOOK CLOSER. When visiting a museum, do you feel like you need to see everything? Maybe you don't.

One practice being explored in museums is beautifully simple: slow looking. Instead of moving quickly from one display to another, spend more time with fewer objects. Look at the lines. Notice the texture. Observe the colors. Listen to the sounds around you. Be aware of the space. Notice how the object makes you feel. You do not always have to find the “correct” interpretation.

In Denmark, the See Listen Talk program worked with young psychiatric-service users using this approach. Participants were encouraged to observe and experience artworks rather than immediately searching for their meaning. Early research from the program suggests that participants began using slow looking as a coping strategy while experiencing meaningful group conversations and reduced feelings of isolation.

The practice is not limited to visitors. At the Getty, mindful-looking sessions have also been offered to museum staff, giving people working across the institution opportunities to pause, meditate, observe art, and reconnect.
In our everyday Filipino lives; between work, school, family responsibilities, traffic, notifications, and countless things demanding our attention, slowing down can sometimes feel like a luxury.

Perhaps museums can give us permission to do exactly that. You don't need to finish the entire gallery. Sometimes, one object is enough.
