The Philippines, with the fifth-longest coastline in the world, is home to 18 seagrass species that play a vital role in sustaining marine biodiversity, fisheries, and coastal communities. These ecosystems support endangered species like sea turtles and sea cows.

Beyond this ecological value, seagrass conservation supports biodiversity and delivers vital climate resilience benefits such as storing carbon, protecting coastlines, buffering communities from stronger storms and sea-level rise, and sustaining livelihoods.

However, despite their importance, seagrass habitats are under threat. The Philippines loses seagrass at a rate of 2.62% per year, driven by coastal development, pollution, sedimentation, tourism, and unsustainable fishing practices. In areas like Busuanga and Roxas in Palawan, seagrass meadows are particularly critical for marine species but are increasingly at risk from human activity.

This World Seagrass Day, the Climate Change Commission calls for urgent action to protect and restore seagrass ecosystems, ensuring that these vital habitats continue to sustain both our marine life and the climate-resilient future of coastal communities across the Philippines.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Tricentenario of Ticao Logo Design Contest
The Ticao Tricentenario Working Group is calling on all artists and visionaries. We are searching for a logo that captures three centuries of faith, resilience and royalty. Help us commemorate the milestones that defined our home and our Tigaonon identity.
⚓️ 1726 Voyage: Remembering the sinking of Galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos and miraculous rescue of the crucifix of Santo Cristo on July 23, 1726.
🛐 Divine Patron: Enthronement of the Santo Cristo as Patron of Ticao and the "Traslacion" (transfer through a procession) to San Jacinto from its original place in San Fernando.
👑Royal Legacy: Honoring the 305-years history of San Jacinto as a recognised royal town by its name "San Jacinto El Real".
From four towns to one vision—this year, Ticao rises as ONE TICAO, united today and strengthened for the future.
Your art is the bridge between the past and our bright future. Let your design tell your story.
Please take note that pre-colonial Ticao, the island was inhabited by native and long-standing communities with own government and way of life, heritage, belief systems, and cultural traditions.

Valentines Day. From the Roman times, to the Middle Ages, to the modern romantic period, Valentines Day has been celebrated in many ways. Probably apart from exchanging Valentines cards (which is actually 'passe' now with the advent of social media and texts), there are other ways this day is being celebrated in other cultures. Though in modern and commercial era, this day is associated with romance - chocolates and roses, etc.

From a deeper perspective, its meaning is embodied in Corinthians 1-13 "Love is patient, kind, and self-giving."

Happy Valentines Day, dear Friends of Museo de Ticao.💞

Maki sining tayo. Because art invites reflection, connects people, and preserves memory just what Museo de Ticao aims to achieve. Though we start preserving the memories of the past, in every painting, old photographs displayed and other memorabilia lives the voice of our ancestors and the creativity of the present generation.

It may have been mandated by Presidential Decree 683, but February as arts month is observed world-wide by other cultures.

I am sharing this post from National Commission for Culture and Arts. May art continue to inspire unity, reflection, and pride in the identity of Tigaonon.

Changing mindset about our throw away items. The Recycles/upcycles Workshop may have been interrupted by typhoon ADA. Instead of curling in bed which is the normal activity during typhoon season, a small group of friends decided to hold it anyway at Museo de Ticao at Pasalubong Center in San Jacinto. It became the wait for typhoon to go away activity. We did it despite the two hours brownout.

Thanks to Arch and Tourism Head Rhodiebert Nuevo, wife Kristine and son Jeho, Margie Villahermosa , Ronnie Barrun, Salvi Villahermosa and daughter Akish and Lubelyn Altarejos.

Watch out for schedule in the coming months.

Bring them out of the “baul”!🗃️🍱 ⚓️

The year 2026 marks the 300th year of a momentous celebration for the Island of Ticao. Long before Spanish colonization, Ticao already had established settlements, its own system of governance, and a distinct way of life. The earliest known settlement, then called Tigao, was located outside of what is now the town of San Fernando. Because of constant Moro raid then, the settlement moved to San Jacinto.

The months of May, June, July, and August 2026 are especially significant in our history. These months commemorate key events that shaped Ticao’s identity, notably:
• The sinking of the galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos along the eastern seaboard of Ticao on July 23, 1726
• The enthronement of Santo Cristo de Burgos at Altar Mayor in La Iglesia de Tigao
• The establishment of the townhood of San Jacinto in the current San Jacinto which became the premier town in Ticao

shortly thereafter

As part of the tricentennial celebration, we are organizing a photo exhibit that will showcase the way of life in Ticao from the old days to the present. Costumes, family photos, crests, old letters, birth certificates, ids, etc.

We warmly invite the community to contribute photographs kept in family baúls or personal collections. Photos may be submitted to our Museo de Ticao Office office in San Jacinto Pasalubong Center Port of San Jacinto in physical form or as scanned copies, accompanied by annotations or brief descriptions (such as names, dates, places, and stories connected to the image).

We also collect other memorabilia’s like old dresses, kitchen utensils and other home items like banga that we can use to recreate the old San Jacinto home - bedroom and kitchen style (eg with bangerahan) before western designs were introduced.

Please be assured that submissions will be returned after documentation, if you do not wish for us to keep them in the Museo.

Through this exhibit, we hope to honor our shared history, preserve collective memory, and pass these stories on to future generations.

Please submit as soon as possible so these can be included in the design. Submission may close end of March 2026.

THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

As much as we would like to proceed with tomorrow’s Recycled Art Workshop, Typhoon ADA has intervened. As the majority of our participants are schoolchildren, their safety is our foremost priority. We encourage everyone to remain in the safety of their homes.

Further updates regarding the rescheduled workshop will be announced.
