This year’s NLM bears the theme “𝐁𝐞𝐤ë𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐧: 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧.” Derived from the Agutaynen word “𝘣𝘦𝘬ë𝘵,” meaning “𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺,” it underscores the power of literature to connect cultures, communities, and the natural world.

The National Museum of the Philippines- Tabon Cave Complex is now 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟲 𝗔𝗠 𝘁𝗼 𝟴 𝗔𝗠 for the “𝗥𝘂𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲.”

Enjoy your run or jog along the Tawa Tawa Boardwalk, with a backdrop of nature and history. If your usual route feels too intense under the morning sun, Lipuun Point offers a refreshing escape with natural shade that lets you run longer and more comfortably.

𝗔 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗔𝗿𝘁

Celebrated every April 15, 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 was established by the International Association of Art to promote the development and appreciation of art worldwide. The date was chosen in honor of the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, a symbol of creativity, innovation, and the timeless connection between art and society. Recognized globally through , the observance underscores the vital role of art in promoting cultural diversity, dialogue, and sustainable development.

This year’s theme invites us to view art as a shared space that nurtures creativity, fosters connection, and allows diverse cultural expressions to flourish within communities.

In support of this global celebration, the National Museum of the Philippines- Tabon Cave Complex continues to cultivate appreciation for art and heritage through its programs and exhibitions. This commitment is reflected in the recent special art exhibition 𝘛𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥, as well as in public programs such as 𝘚𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘯: 𝘗𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 and visitor engagement activities like 𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘢: 𝘈 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺. These initiatives encourage creativity while deepening connections to culture and the natural environment.

From traditional knowledge systems to contemporary artistic expressions, art remains a vital thread that connects people, places, and histories.

Many Filipinos may recognize this familiar riddle, simple in form, yet rich in imagery and wit. Known in Filipino as 𝙗𝙪𝙜𝙩𝙤𝙣𝙜, riddles are part of the Philippines’ oral tradition, long used as a form of entertainment, mental exercise, and cultural expression.

Across the archipelago, different communities have their own versions of this tradition. Among the Tagbanua of Palawan, 𝘣𝘶𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘨 are known as 𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙢-𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙢. These are recited by elders to challenge the thinking skills of the youth, while also imparting knowledge about their environment, daily life, and cultural values.

𝘐𝘨𝘦𝘮-𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘮 are typically composed of short, poetic lines that describe an object, animal, or concept in metaphorical terms. The listener is then invited to interpret the imagery and guess the correct answer, encouraging analytical thinking and creativity.

An example of an 𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘮-𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘮 is as follows:

Tagbanua:
“𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘪 𝘒𝘢𝘳𝘪-𝘬𝘢𝘳𝘪, 𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘪 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘪.”

Tagalog Translation:
“𝘉𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘪 𝘒𝘢𝘳𝘪-𝘬𝘢𝘳𝘪, 𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪 𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘪.”

English Translation:
“The house of Kari-kari, its posts are broken.”

Answer: 𝘈𝘺𝘶-𝘺𝘶 (Crab)

Through such expressions, 𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘮-𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘮 serve not only as a form of amusement, but also as a meaningful vehicle for the transmission of language, knowledge, and worldview. Often drawing from nature and everyday experiences, these riddles reflect the close relationship of the Tagbanua with their surroundings.

In celebration of the National Literature Month, we honor these living traditions that continue to shape and enrich Filipino identity. Oral forms like 𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘮-𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘮 and 𝘣𝘶𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘨 remind us that literature is not only written in books, but also spoken, shared, and remembered across generations.
