A glimpse into the beautiful opening of “Wabi-Sabi”, a group exhibition curated by Abe Orobia and his co-mentors, bringing together the fresh perspectives of Artelier Benilde student artists and the thoughtful expressions of established guest artists.

Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the exhibition invites us to discover beauty in imperfection, celebrate incompleteness, and appreciate the quiet passage of time. Each work reflects authenticity, growth, change, and the stories shaped by experience.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this meaningful gathering of artists and ideas. We warmly invite you to experience “Wabi-Sabi” and discover the beauty in what is wonderfully imperfect.

Wabi-Sabi is a group exhibition curated by Abe Orobia and his co-mentors, featuring Artelier Benilde student artists alongside established guest artists.

Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the exhibition explores the beauty found in imperfection, incompleteness, impermanence, and the natural process of change. Rather than pursuing perfection, the artists embrace authenticity, growth, and the marks left by time and experience.

The exhibition also serves as a mentorship and launching platform for emerging artists, giving them the opportunity to exhibit professionally alongside established artists while developing their individual artistic voices and practices.

Featuring a diverse group of artists, the show celebrates not only finished artworks but also the ongoing journey of becoming—exploration, experimentation, growth, and refinement.

Wabi-Sabi runs from August 16–28 at Nami Art Gallery, Katipunan, Quezon City, alongside Orobia’s solo exhibition “Nature X Nurture.”

Rather than proposing a single image of womanhood, the exhibition recognizes that every act of becoming begins from a different place. For some, it is found in the quiet rhythm of domestic life; for others, in landscape, abstraction, portraiture, or the enduring presence of nature.

These paintings neither arrive at fixed conclusions nor seek definitive statements. Instead, they remain attentive to the ways women continue to shape meaning through observation, labor, intuition, and care.

Viewed together, the exhibition becomes a conversation among women whose individual voices retain their distinct character while sharing a commitment to painting as a space of reflection and possibility.

This Side of Becoming reminds us that becoming is never complete. It is sustained by the courage to imagine, to create, and to see the world anew through the many ways women make their presence visible.

𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗮 studied Fashion Design at SoFa Design Institute. She previously worked as a designer for Carl Jan Cruz

Through her use of mixed fabrics, embroidery, beading, and patchworks. Maya shows different combinations of threads and materials. A playful experiment of craftsmanship.

The materials she used is an assortment of fabrics. Through her materials she is able to conjure a variety of images and textures. Maya’s process includes a lot of material and textile introspection.

The flowers symbolize the growth and transformation one goes through as we transition between all the different eras we go through from our youth to our adulthood. These different chapters of our lives are perfectly encapsulated in the floral cycles; from the budding, to the blooming, to the full blossoming, to the inevitable wilting and decay. Like flowers, humans change and renew ourselves until we reach our fullest form.
