Established in 1960, the Ateneo Art Gallery is widely recognized today as the first museum of Philippine Modern Art.

It is a University Museum now located at the Areté, Ateneo de Manila University's Creativity and Innovation Hub. The Ateneo Art Gallery- widely recognized today as the first museum of Philippine modern art- was established in 1960 through Fernando Zóbel's bequest to the Ateneo of his collection of works by key Filipino post war artists. Through the years other philanthropists and artists followed Zobel's initiative, filling in the gaps so that the collection now surveys every Philippine art movement in the post war era: from neo-realism and abstract expressionism to today's post-modern hybrid tendencies. Artists represented in the collection include Fernando Zóbel, Vicente Manansala, David Cortez Medalla, HR Ocampo, Galo Ocampo, Arturo Luz, Impy Pilapil and Jose Tence Ruiz. The Ateneo Art Gallery hosts innovative exhibitions and public programs highlighting works from its permanent collection as well as works from other collections for special thematic shows. The Ateneo Art Gallery also spearheads an exciting overview of young Philippine contemporary art annually through the Ateneo Art Awards, now recognized as "the most prestigious prize for an emerging artist in the Philippines." Rooted in storytelling, Mallari’s practice moves across painting, illustration, installation, and animation, drawing from folklore, memory, history, and contemporary realities. Through layered and expressive imagery, her work explores identity, displacement, survival, and nostalgia.

Beyond her studio practice, Mallari has been actively involved in collective and socially rooted art-making. She was a member of Grupong Salingpusa, Artista ng Bayan (ABAY), and Sanggawa, and has co-founded initiatives with artist Mark Justiniani, including WAT Art Initiatives in Yogyakarta, Aninagan Art Initiatives, and the Tungtung Alon Art Foundation in Tanay, Rizal—platforms that foster artistic exchange, education, dialogue, and experimentation.

In this ArtSpeak session, Mallari will share insights into her artistic practice and experiences across painting, animation, and collective art-making.

𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗢𝗡 𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪: See Vien Valencia’s 𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 at the Ignacio B Gimenez Amphitheatre, Areté

As one of the winners of the Ateneo Art Awards 2023 - Fernando Zóbel Prizes for Visual Arts, Vien Valencia () was invited for a residency at ABungalow in Talisay, Negros Occidental. The residency is run by Adrian Lizares, whose family owns Hacienda Matab-ang, where Valencia’s 𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 were created and first exhibited.

During his residency from October to November 2024, Valencia examined the reciprocal relationship between human inhabitants and the landscapes they occupy. The project rejects the concept of land as a static matrix, instead positioning it as a living entity transformed by daily human presence and intervention.

The project was developed through a collaboration with local sugarcane farmers, focusing on the interconnectedness of agricultural labor and the land. The primary methodology involved the use of a tractor, the central mechanical tool of the trade, as an instrument for mark-making. Valencia covered the tractor tires with latex paint, driving it across a large-scale canvas laid directly on the land.

The traces of mud, dust, and the physical footprints of the farmers serve as indexical records of the labor required to sustain the site. By translating agricultural movement into visual form, the work records the evolving narrative of the site and the enduring relationship between the community and the spaces they cultivate.

A portion of the 656-foot work is now on view at the Ignacio B Gimenez Amphitheater, Areté.

marks the TalaAnyo’s () first museum exhibition as a group in the Philippines, bringing together works and archival materials that trace five decades of collaborative artistic practice (1976–2026), reflecting on shared approaches to collective art making across generations.

Highlighting its seven member initiatives founded between 2005 and 2022, it features collaborative and community-engaged pieces by the initiatives and their founders:

The exhibition also brings together selected works and archival material from earlier artist collectives, including Kaisahan, Tambisan sa Sining, Artista ng Bayan, Pamilya Pintura, Salingpusa, Sanggawa, Sakay, among others.

Together, these materials revisit the roots of the collaborations that continue to expand the practice of Philippine muralism and socially-engaged art.

54 years ago, on September 21, 1972, Martial Law was declared in the Philippines, ushering a period of authoritarian rule marked by censorship, repression, and widespread human rights violations.

In the years that followed, artists responded to the oppressive and uncertain conditions of the period through works that reflected the realities and struggles of everyday life.

Among them was the group Kaisahan, with its founding members Pablo “Adi” Baens Santos, Edgar Talusan Fernandez, Renato Habulan, Antipas “Biboy” Delotavo, Papo de Asis, Albert Jimenez, and Jose Cuaresma. They were later joined by Al Manrique, Neil Doloricon, Jose Tence Ruiz, Orlando Castillo, and Vin Toledo.

The Kaisahan was also the first to be identified with social realism—an orientation in art that employed different modernist figurative styles capable of depicting everyday conditions and problems.

𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗔𝗣: 𝘌𝘥𝘫𝘰𝘱 (1986) Screening and Talkback held at the Ateneo Art Gallery last September 8

The talkback session was joined by director Jose Cuaresma, writer Roy Iglesias, and Joyette Jopson, daughter of Edgar Jopson and executive producer of the feature film “Edjop,” which premiered in cinemas on September 16. The talkback was moderated by Rosemarie O. Roque, Associate Professor of the Department of Filipinology from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

Cuaresma and Iglesias shared their experience on working on the documentary, including the challenges they faced as the film was being produced during the Martial Law era, just a few years following Edjop’s death. They also touched on their personal memories with Edjop, recalling him as a persistent character that held little to no tolerance for injustice and stood firm with his beliefs, always working closely with different sectors in society and the marginalized.

Joyette Jopson also shared how her personal beliefs on activism have shifted over the years. Being affected by the loss of her father at a young age, Jopson touched on how this was what she had considered would be more than enough to contribute to the cause. However, in recent years, has understood that the fight against injustice and for the people is an ongoing struggle, even more apparent in current times. As executive producer of the feature film “Edjop”–released just this year—Jopson also touched on the process behind making the film and the challenges faced in bringing the film to the big screen.

This public program was organized in line with Ateneo Art Gallery’s Moving Image Program, which is a series of public programs focused on the presentation of film, video works, and lectures that explore moving image as a medium in contemporary art practice.

𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗡𝗢𝗪 📣 Join us for a 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 with Pasilyo Press on 26 September 2026 (Saturday), 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Ben Chan ArtSuite, 2F Ateneo Art Gallery.

This workshop introduces participants to the fundamental techniques of screen printing on both paper and textile. Utilizing basic drawing and stencil-cutting skills, participants will study design adaptability, learn proper ink application, and execute precise studio prints.

Organized in line with the exhibition 𝘖𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵: 𝘈 𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬, the workshop will be facilitated by Alynnah Macla-Tadeo and Taj Hassan Tadeo.

This program is open to participants aged 15 years and up. Participants are requested to bring an apron or old shirt, a plain white t-shirt, and old magazines. Other materials will be provided.

Participation fee: ₱300/head

We would like to thank everyone who joined us for ArtSpeak: Roundtable Dialogue on Art Education, held last August 27 at the Ateneo Art Gallery.

Featured in the roundtable were Emmanuel Garibay of Linangan Art Residency, Mark Justiniani of Tungtung Alon Art Foundation, Abdulmari “Toym” Imao Jr, Dean of the UP College of Fine Arts, and Ma. Victoria T. Herrera, Director and Chief Curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery and Ateneo Fine Arts lecturer. The session was moderated by Lisa Ito-Tapang, educator and curator.

During the session, Garibay and Justiniani shared how their initiatives develop programs that foster artistic development and socio-cultural discourse through art education. They presented examples of past and current programs, which are often coordinated with their respective LGUs and communities, and also in collaboration with other artists and initiatives.

Imao Jr. and Herrera also shared their personal experiences on how they started their careers in art and teaching. They also provided insight on the current landscape of art studies, including discussions on pedagogy, curriculum development, and the limitations faced by institutions.

Featuring works by Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Julie Lluch, Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi, Ang Kiukok, Antonio Austria, Daniel Coquilla, Jose Joya, Edgar Talusan Fernandez, Marciano Galang, Fernando Amorsolo, Rodel Tapaya, and Raffy T. Napay, Scapes invites viewers to reflect on how we construct the world around us—and imagine what other worlds might be possible.
