Ateneo Art Gallery Established in 1960, the Ateneo Art Gallery is widely recognized today as the first museum of Philippine Modern Art.

It is a University Museum now located at the Areté, Ateneo de Manila University's Creativity and Innovation Hub. The Ateneo Art Gallery- widely recognized today as the first museum of Philippine modern art- was established in 1960 through Fernando Zóbel's bequest to the Ateneo of his collection of works by key Filipino post war artists. Through the years other philanthropists and artists followed

Zobel's initiative, filling in the gaps so that the collection now surveys every Philippine art movement in the post war era: from neo-realism and abstract expressionism to today's post-modern hybrid tendencies. Artists represented in the collection include Fernando Zóbel, Vicente Manansala, David Cortez Medalla, HR Ocampo, Galo Ocampo, Arturo Luz, Impy Pilapil and Jose Tence Ruiz. The Ateneo Art Gallery hosts innovative exhibitions and public programs highlighting works from its permanent collection as well as works from other collections for special thematic shows. The Ateneo Art Gallery also spearheads an exciting overview of young Philippine contemporary art annually through the Ateneo Art Awards, now recognized as "the most prestigious prize for an emerging artist in the Philippines." Today, we celebrate 66 years of the Ateneo Art Gallery 🖼️🙋

On 19 August 1960, the (AAG) opened its doors. Widely recognized today as the first museum of Philippine modern art, the AAG was established through Fernando Zóbel’s bequest to the Ateneo of his collection of works by key Filipino postwar artists.

Through the years, other philanthropists and artists followed Zóbel’s initiative, filling in the gaps so that the collection now surveys every Philippine art movement in the post-war era: from neo-realism and abstract expressionism to today’s postmodern hybrid tendencies.

The museum’s collection continues to grow through the generosity of donors and patrons, as seen in our 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝘼𝙘𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. The exhibition presents works acquired in recent years, broadening the representation of contemporary and emerging art practices in the permanent collection. It features donated works by artists and patrons, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, prints, and other media-based works.

📍 The new iteration is on view at the Mr & Mrs Chung Te Gallery until July 2027.

[REGISTER NOW] Ateneo Art Gallery presents “Satellite: Hanging Out and Making Art in New Millennium Manila" with Marv Recinto on 25 August 2026 (Tuesday), 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, at the Ben Chan ArtSuite, 2F Ateneo Art Gallery.

By the mid-1990s, fresh Fine Arts graduates from the University of the Philippines–Diliman realised they had nowhere to show their experimental, multidisciplinary artworks, nor a place to hang out. Out of necessity, artists like Ringo Bunoan, Wire Tuason, and Yason Bernal established independent art spaces such as Big Sky Mind, Surrounded by Water, and Third Space respectively. These functioned as both exhibition venues and social hubs. Their art was conceptual, irreverent, sarcastic, humorous and, at times, banal.

In 2003, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) recognized Ringo Bunoan with the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award. In an unconventional but expansive gesture, however, Bunoan did not submit a single-author artwork to the award's group exhibition.

Instead, she curated an exhibition at Big Sky Mind titled Satellite: An Exhibition of Contemporary Art with her friends including Poklong Anading, Lena Cobangbang, Ernest Concepcion, Louie Cordero, Katya Guerrero, Cocoy Lumbao Jr, At Maculangan, Jet Melencio, Manny Migriño, Jayson Oliviera, Ikoy Ricio, Gary Ross-Pastrana, Jun Sabayton, and MM Yu, and submitted its video documentation, Satellite, to the CCP show. In this work, Bunoan and her friends hang out, make art and install and open the exhibition.

Central to Satellite is an emphasis on tambay—the Tagalog word for 'idling' or 'hanging out'—over the teleological art product. Drawing on the tambay’s etymological roots, I propose Satellite evinces a radical movement predicated on anti-institutional, anti-political and anti-aesthetic posturing. It was in alternative sites like these that a new interdisciplinary avant-garde emerged, shaped by a generational ennui and intersecting circles of friends in art, film and music.

She serves as the Education and Research Head and Human Rights Desk Officer of Surian ng Sining, a national cultural center of organizations, artists, creatives and cultural workers rooted in the mass movement to uphold national, scientific and mass-oriented culture. She is also a member of the secretariat for Free Our Unionists Network and interns at the Center for Trade Union and Human Rights, a labor and human rights NGO in the Philippines working for empowerment of workers. This National History Month, we look back at a pivotal chapter in Philippine art through the exhibition 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙜 𝙆𝙖𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙝𝙖𝙣 🇵🇭✍️🎨

Five decades ago, in 1976, the 𝗞𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 was founded by a group of young visual artists who shared a social orientation and commitment. They engaged in community projects through workshops, lectures, and group discussions on political art.

The exhibit highlights works by the 𝗞𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 founding members from the Ateneo Art Gallery collection and a selection of loaned works. It presents an overview of the chapter in Philippine contemporary art that responded to the oppressive and uncertain period of Martial Law and the years that followed.

𝗞𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 artists were the first to be identified with social realism, an orientation in art that employed different modernist figurative styles capable of depicting everyday conditions and problems.

𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘨 𝘒𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘯 also features works by National Artist Benedicto Cabrera, Danilo Dalena, Nunelucio Alvarado, and Charlie Co, providing context for the development of socio-realist and protest art in the Philippines before and after the founding of Kaisahan.

Through this exhibition, we remember how artists have documented, questioned, and responded to our social realities—and how their works continue to shape our understanding of the past.
