Angelito Antonio

Angelito Antonio, held a distinguished place in the canon of Philippine modern art. Born on February 3, 1939, in Malolos, Bulacan, he studied Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas, graduating in 1963. Under the mentorship of National Artists Vicente Manansala and Galo Ocampo, Antonio honed his craft, drawing inspiration from both local folk traditions and Western modernist influences. His early works reflected social realism, capturing the everyday lives of Filipinos with empathy and clarity. Over time, his style evolved, incorporating elements of abstraction and expressionism, characterized by bold lines and vibrant colors.
Throughout his illustrious career, Antonio received numerous accolades, including the Grand Prize at the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual Art Competition in 1964 and the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1970. His works were featured in both local and international exhibitions. Antonio’s art was deeply rooted in Filipino culture, often depicting scenes of rural life, religious rituals, and community gatherings, reflecting his profound connection to his heritage.
Beyond his personal achievements, Antonio’s legacy endures through his family. He was married to fellow artist Norma Belleza, and together they raised three children, Marcel, Emil, and Fatima. Antonio’s influence extended beyond his immediate family, inspiring generations of Filipino artists to explore and express their cultural identities through their work. His contributions to Philippine art remain a testament to his dedication, passion, and vision, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire and resonate within the artistic community.
