In 2021, Danish artist Jens Haaning was paid to create an artwork for the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg. The museum gave him money to recreate two earlier works that displayed the average annual salaries of workers in Denmark and Austria using actual cash.

Instead, Haaning sent the museum two completely blank canvases.

He titled the new work Take the Money and Run.

Haaning argued that the missing money was the artwork itself, turning the museum's commission into a statement about wages, working conditions, and the relationship between artists and institutions.

The museum wasn't amused. A dispute followed over the roughly $84,000 it had provided, with the institution demanding that Haaning return the money.

The irony was almost impossible to miss: the museum commissioned a work about money, and the artist responded by taking the money and making that act the work.

Sometimes conceptual art doesn't just make a statement.

Sometimes it sends you the invoice.
