MonCAST Art Club proudly contributed to SIGA 8.0 with the theme "Transcending Rays of Light." Through creativity and collaboration, the club brought this vision to life by crafting both the arc and sash—symbols of unity, passion, and artistic expression.

Led by our President, Art Sagnay, every member poured their time, effort, and talent into each detail, turning a shared idea into a meaningful masterpiece. This achievement reflects not only our skills as artists, but also the strength of teamwork and dedication within the club.

𝐃𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐍𝐆 𝐁𝐔𝐊𝐈𝐃 𝐁𝐘 𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐎 𝐀𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐎 (1928–1937)

𝐃𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐍𝐆 𝐁𝐔𝐊𝐈𝐃, or the maiden in the rice field, shows a medium brown-skinned Filipina portraying the Maria Clara image, representing beauty, modesty, and conservative demeanor during the American colonial period.

Guided by Amorsolo’s use of texture and impressionism, with thin and small brushstrokes, the vibrant tropical sunlight emphasizes her outfit, skin tone, and gentle expression. Her smile and relaxed walk suggest she is enjoying her stroll in the fields, appreciating nature, while her shoulder and attire highlight traditional Filipino modesty.

The painting tells a story of rural life, peaceful, agricultural, and simple and depicts the ideal Filipina as beautiful, conservative, nurturing, and serving her family gracefully. Amorsolo’s style also emphasizes movement and light, making the scene feel lively and warm.

Through his art, Amorsolo celebrates Filipino culture, rural life, and the grace of the Filipina woman.

𝘿𝙞𝙙 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬?

At first glance, the 𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐎𝐋𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐈 𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐓 𝐛𝐲 𝐉𝐚𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐲𝐜𝐤 looks like a simple scene of a couple indoors. But a closer look reveals a tiny mirror behind them that reflects not just the couple, but other hidden figures, almost as if someone else is quietly witnessing the moment. It feels like you, as the viewer, are being pulled into the scene, like you’re part of the story too.

The detail of that small mirror is so carefully painted that it reveals more than what your eyes first see. It’s as if the artist is whispering, “Look again… there’s more to discover.” Making the painting to feel alive, mysterious, and a little bit magical.

𝐌𝐄𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆: This reminds us that art is not always straightforward. Sometimes, the real meaning is hidden in small details that we might miss if we don’t slow down and observe. Just like in real life, people and situations can have deeper stories beneath the surface. So, this artwork teaches us to be more curious, to pay attention, and to understand that there is always more than meets the eye.

‎Pablo Picasso was born in the city of Malaga, Andalusia in Southern Spain. He was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and theatre designer who spent most of his adult life in France. He is widely known as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, co-founding the Cubist movement, inventing constructed sculpture, and co-inventing the collage technique.

𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 (𝐄𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡, 1896)

In Separation, Edvard Munch captures not just a parting, but the quiet, heavy aftermath of love. A man in black stands frozen in grief, while a woman clothed in light drifts away, already letting go.

Her flowing hair trails back and wraps around his chest, as though the bond refuses to break. At his feet, a blood-red, heart-shaped form, often interpreted as a mandrake, roots him in place. It is a symbol of love and pain that will not release its hold.

The painting has been interpreted in many ways: some see unrequited love, while others sense something far darker, where the woman embodies death itself and the man stands as a quiet reflection of Munch’s own grief. That ambiguity may be the painting’s greatest gift, a mirror held up to whoever stands before it.

‎Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci around 1503–1506, is one of the most famous and valuable paintings in the world. It is believed to portray Lisa Gherardini, a woman from Florence, Italy.

‎The painting is known for the subject’s mysterious smile, which seems to change depending on how you look at it. Leonardo used a special technique called sfumato, blending colors softly without clear lines, making the face look very realistic and lifelike.

‎Today, the Mona Lisa is displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, where millions of visitors come to see it every year. It is protected behind glass and carefully preserved because of its importance.

‎One of the most interesting facts is that the painting was once stolen in 1911, which made it even more famous worldwide.

He is celebrated for his mastery of light and shadow, a technique known as chiaroscuro.

𝐁𝐈𝐑𝐓𝐇 𝐎𝐅 𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐒
𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢 (𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐞 1445 - 1510)

“Birth of Venus” was painted on canvas, a support that was widely used throughout the 15th century for decorative works destined to noble houses.

Botticelli takes his inspiration from classical statues for Venus’ modest pose, as she covers her nakedness with long, blond hair, which has reflections of light from the fact that it has been gilded; even the Winds, the pair flying in one another’s embrace, is based on an ancient work, a gem from the Hellenistic period, owned by Lorenzo the Magnificent.

The composition shows the goddess of love and beauty arriving on the island of Cyprus, born of the sea spray and blown there by the winds, Zephyr and, perhaps, Aura. The goddess is standing on a giant scallop shell, as pure and as perfect as a pearl. Where she was met by a young woman, who is sometimes identified as one of the Graces or as the Hora of spring, who holds out a cloak for the goddess covered in flowers. Even the roses, blown in by the wind are a reminder of spring. The subject of the painting, which celebrates Venus as symbol of love and beauty, was perhaps suggested by the poet Agnolo Poliziano.

𝘿𝙞𝙙 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬?

The UST Museum of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1871 by Ramon Martinez, is "the oldest school based museum" in the Philippines. As some of its collections date way back to 1682, when Casto de Elera began gathering scientific specimens and artifacts.

Today, the museum houses a rich collection of scientific samples, cultural artifacts, religious images, coins, medals, and paintings from the 17th to the 20th centuries. It also features works by renowned Filipino artists such as Fernando Amorsolo, Carlos Francisco, and Vicente Manansala.

Among its most unique treasures are the papal chairs used by Pope John Paul II (1995) and Pope Francis (2015).
A true treasure house of Philippine art, culture, and history, the museum remains a must visit for history lovers and art enthusiasts alike. 🎨🇵🇭
