HAPPENING NEXT SATURDAY

Learn the art of piano-hinge bookbinding in this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop with Francine Lima of Tienda Wabas. Participants will create pages for a collaborative book and craft a small take-home book using repurposed papers and simple materials, exploring creativity through binding, folding, and assembling.

Francine Lima is a book and paper artist whose practice expands on traditional and contemporary papermaking and book arts. Her works explore materiality, process, and storytelling through paper, fibers, and repurposed materials, guided by themes of mending, renewal, and transformation. She attended the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman and has trained with book artists and papermakers from the USA, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. She was the apprentice of Japanese master papermaker Asao Shimura. Lima regularly conducts papermaking and bookbinding workshops to promote the creative possibilities of the book as an art form.

She is the founder of Tienda Wabas, once a general craft enterprise with the goal of funding Francine’s studies that now specializes in bookbinding and papermaking with innovative designs and remarkable craftsmanship. They believe that the handmade products, especially those made of paper, are a way to better connect with the natural world. They hope to provide a respite from the detached conditions of modern life.

VIEW NOW: The edited transcript of Singaporean artist Daniel Chong’s talk is now live on our site.

Held last 23 November 2025, Daniel Chong’s talk traces his practice as a living language, which is built from subtle, recurring gestures rather than fixed themes, to explore intimacy and absurdity. Moving across sculpture, video, and ephemeral materials, he reflects on desire, absence, maintenance, and nation-building in Singapore, where restraint, illusion, and quiet gestures reveal how identities and structures are formed, sustained, and quietly unraveled.

“Perhaps it’s easier to be loved by the state as a plant than as a person,” Daniel reflects.

Scan the QR code or visit the link in our bio to access the full transcript.

This event was presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Open House: counteracts,” on view until 25 January 2026.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Drawing from the ambient soundscape and subtle hauntings of Calle Wright, from delivery trucks and school rehearsals to the quiet pull of a Balete tree out back, the exhibition explores the porous boundary between presence and disturbance. Through sound, intervention, and counterbalance, the works seek to restore equilibrium to the site’s shifting energies.
