BLINDED AND TIGHTENED

Theme: "Pane-an"
Tagakolu Pattern: Talapuso, Kinaig, and Migwaling

Mixed
50cm x 40cm
2024

The painting explains the metaphor of blindness to represent a metaphorical darkness that has fallen upon a certain place. This darkness represents a variety of things: loss of tradition, external threat, or internal conflict. The painting highlights the importance of community and shared experiences in overcoming adversity. The darkness, while causing pain and suffering, also serves to strengthen their bonds and deepen their understanding of their own resilience. Overall, the painting is about the human capacity for hope, the power of community, and the enduring spirit of resilience in the face of adversity.

MANENGGEYA REEF

Theme: "Pane-an"
Tagakolu Pattern: Binuwaya

Acrylic
36 inches x 24 inches
2024

(These artworks present the story of three teenagers wanting to uncover the existence of โ€œbuwayaโ€ based on Tagakulo โ€œBinuwayaโ€ tale.)

Once upon a time, two siblings from the mountainous part of Davao Occidental heard about the tale of โ€œbinuwayaโ€. One day, they planned to go to the sea and search for the โ€˜buwayaโ€ by themselves, but they had one problemโ€ฆ they didnโ€™t own a boat.

But eager as they are, they adventurously went down to the shores from their home and went to their friendโ€™s coastal village. The beach was far, but their eagerness to explore compelled them to try. They excitedly told their friend about their plan and pleaded to borrow his fatherโ€™s small fishing banca. It turns out that their friend decided to join them on their quest.

The next morning, they meet by the beach as planned. Soon ready, they gently pushed the borrowed boat offshore. Bravely they paddled ahead, looking, searching, and waiting to see โ€œbuwayaโ€. Soon enough, the sea current brought them into deeper waters, but no proof of โ€œbuwayaโ€ seemed evident. Instead, underwater they saw different kinds of fish and sea creatures, like corals, seagrasses, seacow, sea turtle, and so many more. The three friends gasped in awe and amazement at all the wonder they saw.

My point isโ€ฆ even though lifeโ€™s adventures might be scary and unknown, when you readily explore - deeper, wider, you will find beauty and light! And be able to see life's colorful array, and say, "kanenggeya (beautiful)"
