From sacred symbols to street art. Exploring heritage through the boundless vision of Ronald Ventura.

Ventura is a contemporary Filipino artist known for his dynamic melding of realism, cartoons, and graffiti. Portraying scenes of chaotic disarray, he culls from science fiction, Western history, Asian mythology, Catholicism, and popular comic book characters, in producing his work.

Ave Maria by Franz Schubert is one of the most beloved and frequently performed sacred pieces in classical music, though its origin is often misunderstood.

Composed in 1825, the piece is originally titled "Ellens dritter Gesang" (Ellen’s Third Song) and is part of Schubert’s Op. 52, a set of seven songs based on Walter Scott’s epic poem The Lady of the Lake, translated into German. It was not originally intended as a setting of the traditional Latin Ave Maria prayer, but rather a German art song sung by the character Ellen, who is praying to the Virgin Mary.

Over time, the song’s beautiful and reverent melody was paired with the traditional Latin "Ave Maria" text, leading to its widespread use in religious ceremonies, weddings, and funerals. Today, it is often performed by solo voice with piano or orchestral accompaniment, and has been arranged for many instrumentations.

Despite its secular origins, Schubert’s "Ave Maria" has become a spiritual classic, admired for its lyrical grace, emotional depth, and timeless devotion.

Thanks to Adrik and Mark for such a wonderful music, a heartfelt tribute on this blessed Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel!
