Warm birthday wishes to Martha Atienza!

Martha Atienza (b. 1981, Manila, Philippines; lives and works in Bantayan Island Philippines) is a Dutch-Filipino video artist exploring the format’s ability to document and question issues related to the environment, community, and development. Born to a Dutch mother and Filipino father, Atienza has navigated between these cultures throughout her life, and the oscillation between the two significantly influence her approach to observation, documentation, and the concept of the gaze. Her video is rooted in both ecological and sociological concerns as she studies the intricate interplay between local traditions, human subjectivity, and the natural world. Frequently examining her immediate surroundings, she excels in exploring the potential of art as a catalyst for societal transformation.

Concurrently, Atienza’s ongoing work can be experienced in her current solo exhibition, The Coconut Tree Methodology, on view at Silverlens Manila until July 11, 2026.

Last look at Art Basel.

Before the fair concludes, we offer a final look at our presentation in the Galleries sector, featuring four intergenerational Southeast Asian women artists: Geraldine Javier, Yee I-Lann, Nicole Coson, and Pacita Abad. Together, their works challenge the boundaries of materiality, history, and form. Concurrently, visitors are invited to experience Coson’s striking public installation of suspended, aluminum-cast oyster shells, currently activating the city’s Parcours sector at Klara.

We extend our gratitude to the collectors, institutions, and patrons who joined us for this milestone edition.

Closer Look: The 2026 VISIBLE Situated Fellowship, supported by ZEGNA, was awarded to GOODLand by Martha Atienza, who made history as the inaugural recipient of this award. Announced in Basel in partnership with Art Basel, the fellowship was presented by ZEGNART and VISIBLE—a joint initiative of Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto and Fondazione Zegna.

Developed through close collaboration with fisherpeople, farmers, local communities, and institutions, GOODLand operates through a model of collective care that connects ecological protection, coastal communities’ rights, and self-sufficiency. Rooted in local agricultural and environmental knowledge, the platform brings a vital grassroots perspective to the international stage. An exhibition of Atienza’s works was on display, highlighting sustainable relationships with both land and sea.

Concurrently, Atienza’s ongoing work can be experienced in her current solo exhibition, The Coconut Tree Methodology, on view at Silverlens Manila until July 11, 2026.

Unveiling our Art Basel Exclusive works: Yee I-Lann’s “make a mat”, and “flatten the box”, 2026.

Woven in collaboration with S. Narty Raitom, Zaitun Raitom, Julia Ginasius, Julitah Kulinting, Lili Naming, Shahrizan Bin Juin, Johin Endelengau, and Siat Yanau, these tikars represent the pinnacle of the artist’s communal practice. Rooted in Southeast Asian history, the mat serves as an egalitarian, floor-level space for gathering that functions as a direct form of political resistance against the hierarchical power of the colonial table. Featuring woven pixels of boxes that reference Conway’s Game of Life computer simulation, these new works use the imagery of containment to explore inheritance, decentralization, and the artist’s call to “unfold the box” into a mat that holds everyone.

Visit us at Art Basel Booth L13 through 21 June to see these exclusive works alongside further highlights.
