Nuns with weapons, women undressed, people just passing time โ€” her work doesn't explain itself or ask to be admired, it just pays attention. In a culture where everyone has their best foot forward, Patricia's paintings have nothing to hide.

In this self-portrait, Tony Mercado presents himself in a moment of repose. A slant of light from an unseen window falls onto the figure, animating the room with a quiet drama of illumination and shadow. The thick, cushiony chair upon which he sits casts soft forms onto the wall and floor, grounding the composition in the intimacy of an interior space. His gaze settles on nothing in particular. It is the look of someone whose obligations have momentarily receded, whose attention is no longer tethered to the demands of work. Here, the artist allows himself the rare luxury of stillness.

Cradled in his arms is a generous bouquet of sunflowers, flowers long associated with vitality, devotion, and the pursuit of light. Their presence inevitably recalls the Expressionist tradition, particularly Van Gogh, whose sunflowers became emblems of emotional intensity and spiritual yearning. Mercado's heavily textured surface, with paint accumulating into tactile passages, situates the work within this lineage, where feeling is conveyed not merely through image but through the materiality of paint itself. The bouquet appears radiant, almost overflowing with life, its golden blooms echoing the warm light that embraces the figure. The self, this painting reminds us, may also reveal itself when it is least concerned with being seen.

In this self-portrait, RC Caringal presents an extreme close-up of her face, obscured by her own fingers. So near is the viewer to the subject that what emerges are only fragments: the thicket of an eyebrow, the partial aperture of an eye. The face retreats from full disclosure, yet another biography unfolds in its placeโ€”that of the hands themselves, the very instruments that brought this painting into being. We are invited to trace the wrinkles of the knuckles, the crescents of the nails, the folds and ridges of skin that bear the evidence of labor, touch, and time.

Employing thick impasto passages, Caringal renders skin not as smooth surface but as terrainโ€”vulnerable, imperfect, and insistently human. In opposition to the polished and filtered aesthetics of the social media age, she embraces blemish, texture, and irregularity. The brightly illuminated composition heightens this sense of intimacy. Rather than flattering its subject, the light exposes every contour and crevice, drawing the viewer until looking itself becomes an act of encounter.

20/06/2026

In this self-portrait, Marvin Quizon places himself at the center of the pictorial field, eyes closed, a halo encircling his head. This is a secular hagiography, one in which the artist casts himself as both subject and saint. Held in one hand is a curious fusion of heart and brain, aflame like the Sacred Heart, conflating emotion and intellect into a single organ of being. In the other is an unsheathed sword around which a serpent coils, suggesting that courage is never free from peril, and that conviction itself may harbor its own dangerous seductions.

What commands attention are the two attendant figures flanking him. On one side is a cherub, on the other a devil, both bearing the artistโ€™s likeness. They are not external forces competing for dominion over the self but manifestations of the self itself, inseparable and coexistent. Virtue and transgression, tenderness and aggression, aspiration and weaknessโ€”these appear not as opposites to be resolved but as conditions of human existence. The title, which translates to โ€œnothing cherished,โ€ suggests that to know oneself is not to eradicate darkness in favor of light, but to recognize how both inhabit the same interior terrain.

In this self-portrait, Isko Andrade offers a composition of yarn and cloth radiating from a central point. Bearing the contours of an oval face, the work reconfigures the artist's favored material vocabulary of textiles into a discernible likeness. While much of Andrade's practice has long functioned as a surrogate self-portraitโ€”his ropes, folds, knots, and fabrics carrying emotional and psychological resonancesโ€”here the gesture becomes more explicit, the language of material assembling itself into an image of the self.

Some strands terminate in loose ends; certain pieces of cloth flare outward in gentle folds. At the center of the composition is a delicate efflorescence of white yarn, a luminous nucleus alluded to in the title. It suggests a quiet core that gathers and sustains the disparate elements orbiting around it. Amid the textures, tensions, and complexities of lived experience, there remains something irreducibleโ€”a presence that binds memory, feeling, and consciousness into coherence. Whether understood as spirit, soul, or simply the animating spark of being, it is this unseen center that grants shape to our embeddedness in the world.

In this self-portrait, Mark Laza turns his gaze toward the making of masculinity. The artist draws from the visual lexicon of Catholic devotion: the crown of thorns, the nails, the body offered up to suffering as a passage toward transcendence. Echoes of St. Sebastian reverberate through the composition, although here the martyrdom is transformed. Rather than arrows puncturing flesh, sharp metallic studs erupt from the skin itself. Rendered in ashen gray, the face appears burdened, suspended between endurance and surrender, suggesting that the formation is a prolonged ordeal of upheaval, sacrifice, and continual becoming.

The work recalls hagiographical portraiture, yet it departs from the conventions of sainthood. We witness him amid construction. Scaffolds brace and elevate the body, as though identity itself were an unfinished edifice. Cradled close to the chest is an hourglass, a quiet memento mori that introduces the inevitability of time into the narrative of self-making. The portrait thus becomes an arena where biography, aspiration, vulnerability, desire, and self-mythology converge.

In this self-portrait, Maribel Magpoc situates herself and her sister, Mariel, within a โ€œmasterpiece salon,โ€ where the works of canonical artists such as Frida Kahlo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Caravaggio line the walls. Amid these monuments of art history unfolds an intimate domestic scene. Mariel, who has Down syndrome, is shown applying makeup to the artistโ€™s face. Holding a palette in hand, she assumes the role of artist, while Magpoc, eyes gently closed and hair set in rollers, offers herself as a willing subject. The gesture is ordinary and affectionate, a quiet ritual between sisters.

It is uncommon for a self-portrait to make room for another person, yet Magpoc deliberately refuses the singularity often associated with the genre. In this painted gathering of artistic luminaries, the two women insert themselves into a lineage of images while simultaneously reshaping it according to their own experience. The artist bears a unibrow that echoes Kahloโ€™s iconic visage, while a fluffy duck nestles in the crook of her arm in place of an ermine. Mariel, meanwhile, playfully alludes to Caravaggioโ€™s Medusa, her mouth animated into an expressive O. These visual correspondences suggest a familial ease with the history of art, a sense of belonging within spaces from which people like Mariel have often been excluded or overlooked.
