UPLB Museum of Natural History The UPLB Museum of Natural History, now on its 49th year, has served as one of the most important repositories of Philippine biological specimens since 1976.

The Museum of Natural History was established on September 30, 1976 by the University of the Philippines. This museum consists of preserved biological and zoological specimens, wood samples; by-products of microorganism, and also thousands of living plants/trees maintained in a separate location. This museum also serves as a reference for science and a center for documentation, research, and infor

mation. It has a diverse collection of more than 200,000 preserved Philippine animals, plants, cultures of living microorganisms, and other biota that showcase the country’s rich biodiversity.

| Huge congratulations to our interns from Southern Luzon State University Main Campus for successfully completing their internship at the UPLB Museum of Natural History! 🥳👏🏻

For 240 hours, James and Mar worked closely with our researchers from the D.S. Rabor Wildlife Collection and the Zoological and Wildlife Collection. They wrapped up their journey with an Exit Presentation on May 26, 2026, alongside their internship supervisors and other interns. From challenging Mt. Makiling Hikes to rigorous data analysis, they experienced a glimpse of the full spectrum of field-to-museum work!

We are incredibly proud of you both and deeply grateful for all your hard work and contributions to the museum. We wish you the absolute best in your future careers, and we hope your time with us was both fruitful and memorable! 🎓✨

| The UPLB Museum of Natural History recently welcomed back our partners from DOST Advanced Science and Technology Institute last May 13 and 18, 2026, for another round of data gathering under Project Mus3o, a component of Project NAIRA under the ACABAI Program.

For nearly three years, our Entomological Collection team has been collaborating on this AI project, which aims to build a system for 3D insect reconstruction and specimen digitization.

These four interns are all BS Biology students: Joshua O. Caranyagan, Anna Michaela B. Halili, Alexandra C. Borja, and Jobelyn P. Argote. For the next 150 hours, they will work closely with our museum researchers and staff from the Botanical Herbairum, Forestry Herbarium and Wood Collection, D.S. Rabor Wildlife Collection, and Zoological and Wildlife Collection.

The UPLB Museum of Natural History joins the global community in celebrating 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔!

Every year, on May 18, the International Council of Museums - ICOM organizes the International Museum Day (IMD), a global event highlighting the transformative role of museums in society. This year’s theme, “𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒖𝒎𝒔 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝑫𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅,” reminds us that museums are vital bridges for dialogue, inclusion, and shared understanding. The theme also guides ICOM’s 80th Anniversary festivities.

While our physical doors are currently closed, our mission never stops. We remain fully active in biodiversity research, finding new ways to bring the wonders of natural science directly to you.

Dr. Sheryl A. Yap, UPLB Museum of Natural History curator for weevils and hoppers, co-authored a new genus and species of Philippine spittlebug in their new publication titled "𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐠 (𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐞: 𝐇𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚), 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒂."

Together with her colleagues from University of Southern Mindanao and Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, they described a new genus and two new species of spittlebugs from the Philippines: 𝙈𝙞𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙥𝙖 Crispolon & Yap gen. nov., with two new species, 𝙈. 𝙛𝙡𝙖𝙢𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙪𝙗𝙧𝙖 Crispolon & Soulier-Perkins gen. et sp. nov., and 𝙈. 𝙠𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙮𝙖 Crispolon & Yap gen. et sp. nov. Identification keys to Philippine species of 𝙈𝙞𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙥𝙖 and key to the Philippine genera of Poeciloterpina Schmidt, 1920 were provided. A short note on the subtribal classification of the genus 𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙖 Crispolon & Soulier-Perkins, 2021 was also included.

| The UPLB Museum of Natural History welcomes its first batch of interns from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus!

These five dedicated students are embarking on a rigorous 360-hour journey (our most extensive internship yet) to explore the intricacies of taxonomy and biodiversity conservation: Christine Joy Carrera, Atara Shammae Hilado, Darlene Orfiano, Fran Cheska Florendo, and Graciela Lorenzana.

They will be working closely with our researchers from the Mycological Herbarium, Botanical Herbarium, and Zoological and Wildlife Collection.

We can’t wait to see your contribution to science! Good luck, interns!
