It takes a lot more than just one person to bring a creative space from idea into fruition. In honor of Labor Day 2026, meet the minds and hands behind the Lapu-lapu Art Gallery and Cultural Hub, who with the help of our city tourism office have brought forth a space that works to celebrate arts and culture!

From careful artistic curation to drilling nails on the wall where we hang our artworks, to writing papers and research material; From brainstorming the concept of a physical place meant for the Oponganon art scene to typing down this caption that tells you we are here to make this space for you. This is us!

We are a nation built on the backs of workers.
HAPPY LABOR DAY TO ALL!

March 29 marked the opening of Lamdag sa Lampakanay at the Lapu-Lapu Art Gallery. It was a day filled with curious visitors, shared stories, and a closer look at the craft behind each piece.

Guests got to see how Lampakanay goes beyond its usual useโ€”turned into bags, decor, and everyday items that carry both function and thoughtful design. More than the works themselves, it was the presence of the artisans and their stories that made the experience feel grounded and real.

If you havenโ€™t dropped by yet, thereโ€™s still time to see it for yourself.

Thank you Brgy. Basak Kap Jasmine "Daday" Chan for visiting the Lapu-Lapu Galleryโ€™s interactive exhibit โ€œLamdag sa Lampakanayโ€ of CIT-U 4th year Multimedia Arts students Elaira Rose Espra, Bridgette Marie Farinas and Hannah Isabel Navarra, this afternoon (April 10). The exhibit features the โ€œlampakanayโ€, a sea grass that is usually found in abundance at Barangay Basak, Sudtonggan, Lapu-Lapu City. This stands as the source of livelihood for the residents of the barangay and their very own local artisans highlighting the local pride of craftsmanship, artistry and cultural heritage of Lapu-Lapu City.

The exhibit will run until April 25, 2026 so donโ€™t miss your chance and opportunity of visiting the Lapu-Lapu Gallery from Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.

Actually, thereโ€™s so much more to do, so many stories to read, and so much to learn. We are just giving you a glimpse of what it's like to experience an interactive multimedia exhibit.

An interactive Lampakanay exhibit enriches learning by blending visuals, sound, and hands-on engagement, making culture more meaningful and memorable.

LAMDAG SA LAMPAKANAY: A Multimedia Thesis Exhibit opens at the Lapu-Lapu Art Gallery and Cultural Hub!

Lampakanay, a name given to sea grass found in abundance at Barangay Basak, Sudtonggan, Lapu-Lapu City, is the source of livelihood for local artisans in communities within Babag and Basak. The thesis exhibition by graduating Multimedia-Arts students of the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CIT-U): Elaira Rose Espra, Brigiette Marie Farinas, and Hannah Isabel Navarra gives a rich dive into the craft, providing various informative materials like live demonstrations with the Hilbahan and Torsehan (rope-making machines), a 3D animated overview of its history and continued practice, an interactive tactile book, and physical resources and products of the rope itself.

The exhibit highlights the craft makers as the heart of the practice and as cultural bearers in Lapu-Lapu City.

Visit the Lapu-Lapu Art Gallery and Cultural Hub to experience the exhibit yourself and regain a new, profound appreciation for local craft!

The exhibit will be open from March 29โ€“April 20, 2026.
