From Drawing to Animation: A Retrospective and Painting Exhibit

Drawing, animation, and painting are interconnected art forms that share foundational principles. Drawing serves as the backbone of both animation and painting. In animation, drawings come to life through movement, transforming static images into dynamic sequences that convey emotion and story. Painting, on the other hand, builds upon drawing by adding depth, texture, and color, creating visually rich and evocative works.

The "Mother and Child" concept embodies the universal theme of maternal love and the profound bond between a parent and child. The concept explores the interplay of intimacy, protection, and nurturance; portraying the mother as a source of life, strength, and comfort, while the child represents innocence, dependence, and the continuity of life.

This exhibition showcases the creative journey of Jebbie E. Barrios, with his drawings as
Filipino animator whose career spans over two decades across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Featured also are his animation works and paintings, highlighting his mastery in both Japanese and Western styles. His works reflect a Filipino’s deep understanding of storytelling, visual development, and artistic craftsmanship.

Now an academic mentor, his influence extends beyond the industry, inspiring future generations of animators. This exhibition celebrates his creativity, adaptability, and enduring contributions to the global animation and multimedia arts landscape.

The Sto. Niño is not part of our deep history (another word for precolonial period) but was brought to us by the Spanish colonizers. It was gifted by Magellan to Queen Juana (baptized name of the wife of Rajah Humabon of Sugbu) and became a permanent replacement to her anito (idol). From then on, the Sto. Niño became a common household fixture. To Nick Joaquin, the eminent writer, the image figures as the meeting of the historic and prehistoric, Europe and the Tropics, the Old and the New, the sacred and the profane.

On the other hand, Brillantes’ way of ‘figuring’ the Sto. Niño can be read as innocent. He tries to simplify the complex historical elements in the figure, stripping it of grand details, illustrating the parts of the body in bold lines, and intentionally retaining the ‘unintentional’ splatters. What remains of the figuring is an image with a child-like and curious gaze asking why they became the different persona and characters any owner wanted them to be, from the boy-king to the palaboy to the ati-atihan reveller.

This is Brillantes’ first one-person show and already he has shown a deeper promise. His rough but confident brushstrokes are daring enough to paint a sensitive image and turn them into subject not of veneration but of our own personal reflections on our being Akeanon in particular, and Filipino in general.
