Last July 31, 2026 was a day filled with joy, laughter, and a bittersweet touch of sadness as our IDS immersion students officially completed their 80-hour work immersion here at the Natural Science Museum - Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). 🎉And just like that, it is a wrap! These students leave with more than just memories. They leave with skills, knowledge, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

From the full herbarium process of collecting, pressing, drying, and mounting voucher specimens, to rechecking herbarium outputs and uncovering the invasiveness and even the medicinal uses of each plant 🌿 , and of course the unforgettable hands-on taxidermy session 🐟, every activity was a testament to their hard work and growing love for science.

To our IDS babies, thank you for your enthusiasm, your dedication, and for bringing so much laughter and light energy. You made this place feel warmer and we are truly grateful for every moment you spent here. We could not be more proud of everything you have accomplished in those 80 hours!

‎From Field to Herbarium Sheet!

‎Our Grade 12 immersion students from IDS went through the full herbarium process right here at the MSU-IIT Natural Science Museum, starting with collecting various flora specimens across the MSU-IIT campus, all the way to pressing, drying, and finally mounting them as proper herbarium specimens. A complete end to end herbarium experience!

‎It was a journey that tested their patience and precision at every stage, but these students embraced each step with curiosity and determination. Challenging at times? Absolutely. Worth it? Without a doubt. The final mounted specimens speak for themselves.

‎Through this hands-on experience, the students gained a genuine appreciation for the role of herbarium science in biodiversity research and preservation. Every leaf collected, pressed, and mounted is a small but meaningful contribution to documenting the natural world around us. 🌱🌺

Forces Combined, Specimens Preserved!

From curious minds to steady hands! Two Grade 12 immersion students from IDS joined forces at the MSU-IIT Natural Science Museum for a hands-on taxidermy training session, united by wit, determination, and a shared willingness to take on something truly unique.🌟

The session was filled with wit, might, and yes, a little fishy happenings along the way but through every challenging step, they
pushed through and delivered results that were nothing short of remarkable. A productive day all around!

More than just a skill, this experience was a genuine eye opener on the importance of specimen preservation in biodiversity research, education, and conservation. Experiences like these lay a foundation for future researchers, reminding them that preserving biological records today is protecting our natural heritage for tomorrow.

National Science Museum - Mindanao State University warmly welcomes Seven undergraduate B.S. Biology students from Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU), Taiwan, along with Dr. Yong Chao Su and accompanied by two Filipino Ph.D. students currently studying at KMU, including UP Mindanao alumnus Mr. Brian Sabanal, MSc.

Throughout their tour here at the museum, the interns are introduced to the rich biodiversity and culture through lectures on Mindanao’s flora and fauna, field collections, and research demonstrations fostering cross-cultural collaboration and inspiring the next generation of bioscience leaders!

That's a wrap for our Marine Biology OJT students of MSU-IIT! 🎉
And what a journey it has been! From the moment they walked through the doors of the MSU-IIT Natural Science Museum, these students showed up with curiosity, dedication, and a willingness to learn that made every single day worthwhile.

Over the course of their training, they rolled up their sleeves and took on so much more than they may have expected. They digitized museum specimens across the Cnidaria, Mollusca, Osteichthyes, Xylarium, and Herbarium collections, conducted inventory by counting specimens on display, got hands-on with taxidermy, learned the art of collecting, pressing, drying, and mounting terrestrial flora for the Herbarium, and ventured out into the field to observe and document endemic Philippine flora. Every task was approached with heart and they delivered beautifully each and every time.

To our Marine Biology students, thank you for your hard work, your patience, and the energy you brought every single day in the museum. You leave here with skills and experiences that go far beyond the ocean, and that is something truly special. 💙

We hope everything you learned here becomes a foundation you carry into your future. May you apply every skill, every lesson, and every memory from this museum as you grow in your journey as Marine Biology students and beyond. We are so proud of you, and of course, see you around!

Taking science beyond the museum walls!

Last July 8, 2026 Our Marine Biology OJT Students of MSU-IIT headed out to SIKYOP Agri-Tourism Adventure, Brgy. Rongogan, Iligan City for a field immersion focused on documenting and identifying terrestrial flora. Before hitting the trails, they offered coins for the safety of their journey and were oriented by tour guides on the proper paths and rules for safe trekking.

Along the way, the students observed and identified various terrestrial plants, many of which are endemic to the Philippines. It was a meaningful experience that expanded their scientific eye beyond the ocean and deepened their appreciation for the richness of our local biodiversity.

Beyond the science, the place had something extra to offer. The rustling of leaves and the beauty of the surroundings gave the students a well deserved chance to breathe, explore, and let nature ease their stress away.🌿

This kind of field exposure is exactly what broadens a scientist's perspective and prepares them for meaningful careers ahead. Well done, OJT students!💙

Welcome back! After all that pressing and drying, we’ve finally made it to the best part. As the MSU-IIT Marine Biology OJT Students completed their herbarium journey last July 7, 2026 by finally transferring their voucher specimens onto mounting sheets, and they turned out stunning. It looks like these Marine Bio Students have quite the green thumb too!

The students had a wonderful time working through the process, and their excitement and enjoyment showed in every carefully mounted piece.

DISCLAIMER: Due to time constraints, the voucher specimens were not waited to completely dry before mounted. The primary goal of this session was for the students to experience and learn the proper process of transferring the voucher specimens into herbarium mounting sheets, which they accomplished beautifully.

Who says Marine Biologists only know the sea?

Yesterday, the Marine Biology OJT students of MSU-IIT stepped out of their comfort zone and got into the world of terrestrial flora as they got hands-on with collecting, pressing, and drying terrestrial plant specimens for the Herbarium collection here at the MSU-IIT Natural Science Museum.

It was a refreshing new experience for them! As Marine Biology students, they are used to working with aquatic flora, which follows a different mounting process compared to terrestrial plants. But that did not slow them down one bit. They took on the challenge with open minds, steady hands, and genuine curiosity.

Indeed, the MSU-IIT is truly a house of cats as the Marine Biology OJT students of MSU-IIT were accompanied by their "fur-fessor" in yesterday's taxidermy session here at the MSU-IIT National Science Museum. The activity was filled with focus, finesse, and a whole lot of fishy fun! as they rolled up their sleeves and turned fresh specimens into beautifully preserved pieces of science and art.

It was no easy task, from careful incisions to skillful mounting, every step demanded patience and precision. But true to their marine science nature, these students rose to the challenge and delivered results that were nothing short of spectacular. These future marine scientist are well on their way, and we are beyond proud to be part of their journey.

As for our "fur-fessor," whether she was ensuring the successful turnout of the activity by keeping a close eye, or rather a close paw on the fish, her presence certainly added some fun to a highly productive day Meowww😹.

The Marine Biology OJT students at MSU-IIT had a productive day at the National Science Museum. Their tasks included digitizing and conducting an inventory of the museum specimens covering those from Mollusca, Cnidaria, and Porifera collections. Working across different specimen collections they gained first hand experience in scientific documentation and collection management, a great opportunity for them to apply their marine science skills they have built throughout their studies and to sharpen their knowledge while contributing to the preservation of our natural heritage.
