On May 6, the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) Dumaguete concluded ๐๐ข๐ฉ๐จ๐ง ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ญ๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ข-๐๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ข, a plush toy-making workshop and seminar held as the first of four events of ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ: ๐ ๐
๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ฅ ๐จ๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ ๐, in celebration of National Heritage Month this May.
Following registration care of Museum Guide Harriet June Tubil, flag ceremony, and an opening prayer led by Museum Technician II Maria Athena D. Piรฑero, the activity formally began with welcome remarks from Administrative Officer V Shimei R. Estimada. The event was organized in partnership with ๐๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ข-๐๐๐ ๐ฉ๐ข, a social enterprise based in Dauin, Negros Oriental that works with women in coastal communities to create handcrafted plush toys, tote bags, and keychains inspired by Philippine wildlife. Through upcycled and discarded materials, the session highlighted the connections between heritage, livelihood, and conservation.
Tagpi-Tagpi founder and marine biologist ๐๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ง๐ โ๐๐โ ๐๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ spoke about how the enterprise grew from a practical response to waste, by converting discarded fashion and plastic materials into plush toys. Museum Researcher II Fred Jordan Mikhail T. Carnice also underscored that recycling alone cannot address a waste crisis driven by the continued production of single-use plastics and that meaningful change requires both community action and systemic accountability, especially among corporations.
The workshop proper was led by Team Manager ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ง ๐๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฆ๐จ and co-facilitated by tailors ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฃ๐จ, ๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐, ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ง ๐๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฆ๐จ, ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐จ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐. ๐๐๐จ๐ง๐ข๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฅ๐จ๐ง. Participants from Teamskills Technological Institute, Inc. 2023 made their own plush toys, choosing from animals found in the Visayas like sea turtles, sea stars, whale sharks, and thresher sharks.
The day closed with an open forum on wildlife conservation, coastal community engagement, and sustainable practices, followed by the distribution of certificates.
Ihalas, a flagship program of NMP-Dumaguete, continues every Wednesday of May. Through this series, the museum holds that Negros Islandโs natural environment requires not just recognition and celebration, but also an active, sustained protection.
