One of the inspirations for Bahandi 2026: The Davao Heritage Conference is the National Museum of the Philippines – Davao gallery “Bahandi: Rituals in the Life Cycles.” The gallery brings together objects and narratives that illuminate how cultural heritage is woven into the significant passages of human life from birth and childhood to adulthood, marriage, death, and remembrance.

In this sense, 𝘣𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪 speaks to the knowledge, practices, objects, relationships, and memories that communities carry across generations.

Some of the most important stories of Davao are not found in a single archive. They live on, in places and in people, in shifting, adapting, evolving communities and landscapes.

For Bahandi 2026, we are pleased to introduce 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝗠. 𝗥𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗼, an anthropologist and archaeologist from the University of the Philippines Mindanao. Her area of expertise includes archaeological heritage, ethnohistory, indigenous peoples’ lifestyles, material culture, and anthropology of worldviews with a focus on Mindanao and indigenous peoples.

Her participation forms part of Bahandi 2026’s broader effort to bring scholarship and lived histories into conversation. Her plenary, “𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒏 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔: 𝑨 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒕 𝑯𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔,” highlights the histories and lifeways of the Pantaron highlands and their significance in understanding Indigenous histories beyond dominant narratives of the Philippine past.

The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) traces its roots to August 12, 1887, with the establishment of the Museo-Biblioteca de Filipinas, the first museum and library in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. This institution laid the foundation for what would eventually become the National Museum of the Philippines, which was later supported by Republic Act No. 8492 and strengthened by Republic Act No. 11333, or the National Museum of the Philippines Act of 2019.

While the National Museum of the Philippines is widely known for its iconic museums in Manila, its stories do not end there. Across the country, the NMP has expanded its reach through its regional component museums, bringing collections, knowledge, and stories of Filipino culture and natural and cultural heritage closer to communities.

In Mindanao, four regional component museums offer visitors a glimpse into the island’s rich and diverse heritage:

But heritage is not treasure just because it is old. It becomes meaningful through the people who remember it, practice it, interpret it, protect it, and sometimes contest what it means.

Bahandi 2026: The Davao Heritage Conference is a platform for examining these processes across Davao Region.

Bringing together scholars, cultural practitioners, artists, educators, heritage workers, students, and communities, the conference asks how heritage changes as places, environments, identities, and institutions change.

From the Indigenous knowledge and living traditions to urban landscapes, foodways, performance, memory, and climate futures, Bahandi examines heritage as a process under continuous production in the present.

This Museums and Galleries Month, the National Museum of the Philippines – Davao brings together researchers, educators, cultural workers, Indigenous knowledge holders, artists, heritage practitioners, students, and communities for Bahandi 2026, a conference on the changing meanings and futures of heritage in Davao Region.

This National Mental Health Day, museum-goers spent a quiet afternoon writing down their intentions, filling out their mindfulness journals, completing essay prompts, and drawing what they are grateful for in life.

They laughed, they pondered, and they delighted in simply being in the moment.

It is good to step back and spend a calm moment of reflection. A museum is not only a space for learning, but also for well-being and balance.

As an academic institution whose core mandate is to protect and promote the country’s natural and cultural heritage, the National Museum of the Philippines – Davao joins the scientific community in celebrating International Geodiversity Day on October 6, 2026.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines geological diversity as the nonliving portion of the planet, both at the surface and in its interior. Geodiversity encompasses the Earth’s minerals, rocks, fossils, soils, sediments, landforms, topography, and hydrological features such as rivers and lakes.

The Davao Region is home to a rich and diverse geological landscape, shaped by the wide variety of rock formations and mineral deposits beneath our feet. From the depths of the Davao Gulf to the towering mountains, each rock tells a story of the evolution of the land and life in the southern Philippines.

In celebration of International Geodiversity Day, let us discover the different rocks and minerals that have shaped the landscape of the Davao Region over millions of years. See these geological treasures in person at the Dagway sa Kayutaan, Dagway sa Kinabuhi Exhibit on the 2nd Floor of the National Museum of the Philippines – Davao. We are open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except during religious holidays.
