The Art of Sculpting Culture

In celebration of the National Heritage Month, the Philippine Consulate General in New York is pleased to present Sculpting Culture, an art exhibition featuring the works of Filipino artist, Kublai Millan

The exhibition will feature a curated collection of sculptures, mixed-media works, and immersive installations that explore cultural identity, memory, and transformation.

The exhibition will run from 15-29 May 2026 and is free and open to the public.

About the Artist:

🎨 Kublai Millan (born Rey Mudjahid Ponce Millan) is a Filipino artist, sculptor, and cultural advocate based in Davao City.

He is widely recognized for his monumental sculptures and vibrant paintings that celebrate the diverse indigenous cultures and spiritual heritage of Mindanao.

He was recognized as Distinguished Alumnus for Culture and the Arts of the University of the Philippines-Diliman in 2015.

We’re calling for donations of discarded luggage and traveling bags for you as art material.

We plan to upcycle your old, unused bags into works of art, transforming them into visual statements of both indignation at the sheer excesses our cultural malaise has taken, and hope for the future flights in store for Mindanao and its peoples.

Let's kick back against our demons and make another beautiful statement, making a national embarrassment into a beautiful opportunity for self reflection!

This powerful image serves as a stark reflection of the Philippine reality today. The skeletal figures, draped only in money, symbolize the soulless greed and corruption behind the ghost flood control projects, where billions of pesos meant to protect communities from devastation were stolen. While the corrupt hide their shame behind ill-gotten wealth, the fiery backdrop represents the chaos and destruction their actions have caused. At their feet, the lamb embodies the innocent Filipino people — silent, suffering, and betrayed — left to face the floods and disasters alone. This painting is a grim reminder that when leaders sell their souls for money, an entire nation pays the price.
