We are delighted to welcome the first batch of visitors to the newly launched Furusato Tourism Circuit! This was made possible through Infinity Travel Co. Ltd. headed by Ma’am Jenny Taglucop, and brought to life by Regional Tour Guide Sir Olan Emboscado .

Our first guests, 32 students from The Abba’s Orchard School Davao, hold a special place as the very first tour group to experience the circuit following its official launch by the Davao City Tourism Operations Office last March.

The Furusato Tour traces the rich history of Davao City beginning at the turn of the 20th century. Through a city walk-style experience, students explored key historical markers at Magsaysay Park, Davao City Hall, and the Ohta Kyozaburo Monument in Mintal. Their itinerary was packed with other key historical areas around Davao. Along the way, they gained a deeper understanding of the people, stories, and structures that shaped the city.

As part of the tour, IMIN The Philippine-Japan Historical Museum, home to significant artifacts of the Filipino-Japanese community that helped build Davao, offered students a more immersive encounter with history through its curated displays. Students were given a guided tour by Sir Veron Nazario, which concluded with a mini calligraphy activity, where students learned proper brush strokes while writing their names.

We look forward to welcoming more groups and creating more meaningful experiences through the Furusato Tours.

IMIN at the Launch of Davao City’s New Tourism Circuits

Last March 6, IMIN – The Philippine-Japan Historical Museum proudly participated in the launch of Davao City’s newest tourism circuits under the “Suroy Ta” initiative. IMIN is honored to be part of the Furusato Davao Tourism Circuit, which highlights the city’s early 20th-century history and the role of the Japanese community—particularly in the development of the abaca industry. These shared histories reflect a relationship shaped by mutual respect, cooperation, and cultural exchange between Filipinos and Japanese.

The name “IMIN,” the Japanese word for immigrant, reflects the museum’s mission to preserve the stories of the early Japanese migrants who helped shape Davao. Representing the museum were Mrs. Carmen Teruya Apigo and Mrs. Karina Yoshida Cadiogan of the IMIN Curatorial Team, together with tour guide Mr. Veron Nazario and two interns from Holy Cross of Calinan College.

At the event, IMIN hosted a booth featuring yukata-wearing demonstrations, origami activities, and museum information for visitors. Other booths also showcased products and experiences from the Abundant Harvest, Davao City Food Crawl, and Market Experience circuits.

IMIN extends its heartfelt thanks to the everyone in the Davao City Tourism Operations Office, the Department of Tourism Region XI, and the many researchers, tourism stakeholders, and history advocates, whose efforts made these tourism circuits possible. Through initiatives like these, more people are given the opportunity to rediscover the stories, places, and cultural connections that continue to shape Davao today.

On February 24, we were delighted to welcome 77 officers and crew members from JS Yamagiri and JS Shiranui to IMIN during their Goodwill Visit to Davao.

The photos say it all — lots of smiles, curiosity, and great conversations as they explored Davao’s history and its strong ties with the Japanese community who lived here before the war. It was history class, IMIN-style — engaging, interactive, and full of energy!

The officers also took time to greet the students of Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai School of Calinan, making the visit even more special for everyone.

A big thank you to Sir Jojo for bringing the group, and to SHS Principal Ma’am Ellen, Sir Veron, Dion Sensei, and our amazing museum interns for the warm welcome.

STRENGTHENING MARITIME FRIENDSHIP: JS YAMAGIRI AND JS SHIRANUI

February 23 was an evening of diplomacy and enduring friendship as representatives of IMIN The Philippine-Japan Historical Museum, together with the Board of Trustees and faculty of Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai and Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku, attended the JS Yamagiri Dinner Reception. The event was graced by Consul General Ono Hirotaka, officers of the Philippine Navy, and members of the Davao City Council.

Held as part of the Goodwill Visit of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, a longstanding tradition of overseas training and friendship visits, the reception reaffirmed the strong maritime partnership between Japan and the Philippines.

For IMIN, whose mission highlights the shared history of Japanese migration to Mindanao and the enduring cultural ties formed since the early 20th century, the evening was a meaningful reminder that today’s maritime cooperation continues a legacy of connection, dialogue, and mutual respect between our nations.

IMIN JOINS THE CELEBRATION OF HIS MAJESTY EMPEROR NARUHITO'S 66th BIRTHDAY

Today marks the 66th birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito. In celebration, a National Day Reception was held on February 19 at the SMX Convention Center, hosted by ConGen ONO Hirotaka of the Consulate General of Japan in Davao 在ダバオ日本国総領事館.

Members of the IMIN Curatorial Team, together with representatives of the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai Inc., attended the event, represented by Dr. Ines Yamanouchi Mallari, Judge Antonina Osh*ta Escovilla, Karina Yoshida Cadiogan, and Shirsyl Nakahara Sincero.

During the reception, Consul General Ono also unveiled and presented the official Friendship Anniversary logo commemorating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines, carrying the theme: “Weaving the Future Together: Peace, Prosperity, Possibilities.” The logo features intertwined ropes inspired by Japan’s shimenawa and the Philippines’ abaca (Manila h**p). The use of abaca by early Japanese migrants in Davao, including traditional tools like the Hag-utan, an abaca-processing implement, can be seen at IMIN Museum. The logo’s rope motif thus resonates with local heritage, illustrating how the enduring ties between Japan and the Philippines are woven not just diplomatically but also through shared history, industry, and cultural exchange.

As stewards of Japanese Filipino heritage in Mindanao, IMIN's presence reflects our continued commitment to preserving our shared history and strengthening the enduring bond between our two nations.

Discover a unique story of friendship and peace between the Philippines and Japan at IMIN!

A MEANINGFUL MILESTONE FOR THE FURUSATO TOURISM CIRCUIT

On February 16, IMIN was honored to be one of the validated sites during the official tour validation conducted by the Department of Tourism – Davao Region, with the presence of Regional Director Ms. Tanya Rabat-Tan, and the Davao City Tourism Operations Office represented by Ms. Gracie Plata. Their group was given a tour by Mr. Veron Nazario of IMIN.

On February 19, the momentum continued with the Regional Tour Guides Familiarization Tour conducted by Regional Tour Guide Sir Olan Fernandez Emboscado, whose knowledge and passion for Davao’s history are truly inspiring. This activity further strengthened the stories and experiences that will bring the Furusato Davao: Japanese Heritage Tour to life.

As a museum dedicated to preserving Filipino-Japanese history, IMIN is proud to be part of this important initiative. Exciting times ahead as we prepare to welcome more students, locals, and visitors to rediscover Davao’s shared heritage.
