ARTIST TIP: Fix Your Canvas Cloth Before Making a Prepared Canvas 🎨

Whenever I buy canvas cloth in Divisoria, the seller almost always folds the fabric. Because of this, the cloth ends up with deep fold lines that can cause problems later on. If you stretch your canvas without fixing these creases first, the wrinkles will show, tighten unevenly, or even become permanent once you apply gesso.

That’s why before I start making a prepared canvas, I always fix the fold lines. A quick steam or light misting on the back of the cloth helps relax the fibers. Once the canvas cloth is smooth and flat, it becomes much easier to stretch tightly on the frame—and the final surface looks cleaner and more professional.

A little preparation saves you a lot of trouble and gives you a cleaner, better-quality canvas for your artwork.
