Students from University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines โ€“ Claveria Campus visited the City Museum of Cagayan de Oro and Heritage Studies Center as part of their Educational Tour under the subject PICPE.

The delegation was composed of 127 participants from the following programs: Bachelor of Science in Livelihood Education Major in Agricultural Fishery Arts (2nd Year) and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (3rd Year), with a total of 71 female and 56 male students.

Aside from exploring the museumโ€™s permanent galleries and learning more about the rich history and heritage of Cagayan de Oro City, the students also had a fun and nostalgic experience at this monthโ€™s featured exhibit, โ€œHanDULAAN, Mga Dulaan sa Kagahapon.โ€ The interactive exhibit showcases the evolution of toys and games from kinaraan to binag-o generations โ€” giving the students a chance not only to see the collections, but also to try and play some of the classic toys themselves. Laughter, friendly competition, and childhood memories filled the gallery as the group enjoyed the playful side of history.

The City Museum of Cagayan de Oro and Heritage Studies Center extends its sincere gratitude to University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines โ€“ Claveria Campus for choosing the museum as part of their learning experience. We are honored to have shared with your students a meaningful, educational, and enjoyable visit.

Today, May 12, 2026, marks the 81st Anniversary of the Liberation of Cagayan from enemy forces during the Second World War, a defining moment in the history of our city and its people.

In commemoration of this historic milestone, the City Museum of Cagayan de Oro and Heritage Studies Center installed a series of simple sintra pubmats and infographics at the second floor of the Water Tower Permanent Exhibits (the American Period and World War II Exhibit). These materials present a concise timeline and visual overview of the events leading to the liberation of Cagayan from May 9 to 12, 1945.

The American Period and World War II Exhibit, one of the museumโ€™s permanent installations, highlights the wartime history of Cagayan de Oro through photographs, narratives, and historical accounts connected to the cityโ€™s experiences during World War II. The newly installed Cagayan Liberated infographics complement the exhibit by providing visitors with a clearer understanding of the military movements, local resistance efforts, and key developments surrounding the liberation of the city.

As we remember this important chapter in local history, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the Kagay-anons, guerrilla fighters, and Allied forces who fought for the freedom of Cagayan 81 years ago.

BALABA PUSHES PRESERVATION OF SEARSOLIN BUILDING AMID ONGOING โ€™CAMPUSโ€™ PROJECT

A COMMITTEE hearing to be presided by the 21st City Councilโ€™s tourism committee is being pursued to discuss the preservation of the Southeast Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute (Searsolin) building located within Xavier Universityโ€™s Manresa campus in uptown Cagayan de Oro City.

In her special report during Monday afternoonโ€™s (May 11) regular City Council session, Councilor and tourism committee chairperson Joyleen Mercedes โ€˜Girlieโ€™ Balaba cited opposition by some alumni to the ongoing โ€˜Campus of the Future' project by developer Cebu Landmasters Inc.

Those opposing the project said the Searsolin building is a significant site that deserves preservation because of its historical, educational and social value. Balaba said the building holds a strong social heritage and legacy.

Built in 1964, Searsolin played a vital role in shaping rural development leaders across Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Balaba said the institution represents the legacy of Fr. William Masterson, SJ, whose mission focused on rural development.

Balaba called on the City Council to determine whether the structure should undergo preservation, conservation, adaptive reuse, or demolition amid the ongoing development in Manresa. She said the 'National Historical Commission of the Philippinesโ€™ cited recognition of XUโ€™s historical significance.

Councilor Balaba said the tourism committee will hold the hearing with the Committee on Agriculture chaired by Councilor Juancho Pascual and will invite representatives of Cebu Landmasters and Xavier University to discuss the issue. (MDS/CIO/File Photo CIO)
