Today, May 12, 2026, marks the 81st Anniversary of the Liberation of Cagayan from enemy forces during the Second World War, a defining moment in the history of our city and its people.
In commemoration of this historic milestone, the City Museum of Cagayan de Oro and Heritage Studies Center installed a series of simple sintra pubmats and infographics at the second floor of the Water Tower Permanent Exhibits (the American Period and World War II Exhibit). These materials present a concise timeline and visual overview of the events leading to the liberation of Cagayan from May 9 to 12, 1945.
The American Period and World War II Exhibit, one of the museumโs permanent installations, highlights the wartime history of Cagayan de Oro through photographs, narratives, and historical accounts connected to the cityโs experiences during World War II. The newly installed Cagayan Liberated infographics complement the exhibit by providing visitors with a clearer understanding of the military movements, local resistance efforts, and key developments surrounding the liberation of the city.
As we remember this important chapter in local history, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the Kagay-anons, guerrilla fighters, and Allied forces who fought for the freedom of Cagayan 81 years ago.
