The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP)–Marinduque is pleased to announce the opening of its newest exhibition, “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗾𝘂𝗲: 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻,” which will be open to the public beginning June 9, 2026. The exhibition highlights the vital role of Marinduque’s coastal and marine biodiversity in shaping the province’s rich natural and cultural heritage while fostering a deeper appreciation of its marine resources and the need for their conservation.

The exhibition underscores the importance of responsible environmental stewardship and encourages every Marinduqueño to take an active role in safeguarding the island’s invaluable natural heritage and the appreciation of the province’s coastal biodiversity for future generations while encouraging the appreciation of the province’s coastal biodiversity.

The exhibition features a diorama depicting Marinduque’s interconnected marine and coastal ecosystems, including coral reefs, rocky intertidal zones, seagrass beds, mangrove forests, and sandy beach habitats. Designed to provide an immersive experience, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the ecological relationships that sustain the province’s marine environment and support local communities. Interactive learning stations and hands-on activities further enrich the visitor experience, making the exhibition accessible and engaging for audiences of all ages.

The ceremonial opening on June 8, 2026, coincides with the celebration of World Oceans Day 2026, emphasizing the exhibition’s message of marine conservation and sustainable management of ocean resources. This exhibition reflects the National Museum of the Philippines’ continuing commitment to promoting awareness, appreciation, and protection of the nation’s natural and cultural heritage, and in support to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals 4, 13, and 14.

This month, we celebrate the heritage of Marinduque through the province’s significant cultural landmarks and historical sites.

Through the craftsmanship and creativity of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology – Drafting students of Marinduque State University, these miniature structures not only exhibited the intricate architectural beauty of the province’s cultural landmarks but also reflected the students’ appreciation for our rich heritage.

The 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 – 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗾𝘂𝗲 is an important cultural institution that preserves and promotes the province’s tangible and intangible heritage through its collections, exhibitions, and public programs. Among these is the renowned Marinduque Celadon Jar, a rare artifact recognized as a National Cultural Treasure for its significant value to history and heritage.

The 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗰 also holds significant historical, architectural, and religious value, earning its recognition as an Important Cultural Property (ICP). As one of the oldest churches in Marinduque, it stands as a symbol of the province’s enduring faith and cultural identity.

Meanwhile, heritage structures and sites such as Casa de Don Emilio and Laylay Port reflect Marinduque’s local history and significant contributions to the province’s social and economic development. The preserved structure of 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗮 𝗱𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗼 showcases the grandeur of traditional Filipino-Spanish architecture and serves as a reminder of Marinduque’s lifestyle and residential heritage during the Spanish era. The 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁, being one of the province’s historic coastal sites, demonstrates Marinduque’s maritime activities, further enriched by an artefact recovered from a shipwreck in the area.

In celebration of National Heritage Month, we are reminded that historical architecture helped us better understand the identity, traditions, and lifestyle of the past, serving as a call for the continuous protection and preservation of our heritage.

𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗔-𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗔 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟: Celebrating Marinduque — The Butterfly Capital of the Philippines

Did you know that Marinduque is home to around 600 butterfly species, locally known as “𝘽𝙞𝙡𝙖-𝘽𝙞𝙡𝙖"? With nearly one-third of the Philippines’ 927 butterfly species endemic to the country, the island province is renowned for its rich butterfly population and significant contribution to biodiversity conservation.

The Bila-Bila Festival was created to honor this natural treasure and to promote Marinduque as the Butterfly Capital of the Philippines. Originally celebrated every December 8 during the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the festival is now held during the vibrant month of May.

Butterfly farming has flourished in Marinduque since its introduction in the 1960s, becoming a successful backyard industry for many local families. Today, the province contributes about 85% of the country’s butterfly and pupa exports — a testament to its thriving biodiversity and environmental stewardship.

To further protect these delicate creatures, the local government of Boac enacted the “Tree Farming and Butterfly Propagation Ordinance of 2002,” officially declaring the municipality a sanctuary for all butterfly species and promoting environmental preservation. This initiative also helped pave the way for the colorful Bila-Bila Festival we celebrate today.

During the festival, the streets of Boac come alive with dazzling butterfly-inspired costumes, vibrant decorations, street dancing performances, kite flying activities, and even butterfly releases into the wild. Every corner of the town transforms into a beautiful tribute to nature and culture.

Beyond their beauty, butterflies are also important bioindicators. Their presence reflects a healthy ecosystem and rich biodiversity. As pollinators, they play a vital role in preserving the balance of flora and fauna in the Philippines, which is recognized as one of the world’s megadiverse countries.

The Bila-Bila Festival is more than a celebration — it is a reminder of the importance of protecting nature while embracing the unique culture and heritage of Marinduque.

𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗜𝗧
𝘏𝘺𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘺𝘤𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘢 𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘴

A small, strikingly colored butterfly, it is widely distributed across the Philippines, including Banton island. As a member of the Lycaenidae family, it exhibits myrmecophily (ant association), an evolutionary partnership with ants. In the wild, its caterpillars are often found in the company of Weaver Ants (𝘖𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘢).

These delicate insects now face a perilous future as climate change and rampant deforestation dismantle the landscapes they depend on. Rising temperatures are shifting traditional migration patterns, while the loss of native flora leaves many species without the specific host plants required for their survival.

This series highlights the urgent need of safeguarding butterfly habitats, recognizing how the combined threats of habitat destruction and a warming planet risk a quiet collapse of biodiversity. Protecting these species is not just about preserving them for their beauty – it is about ensuring the continued resilience of the ecosystem that supports all life on Earth.
