As a gesture of thoughtfulness, my girlfriend noticed my curiosity about the places we visit together. That’s why she suggested — and we made it a rule — to include local museums in our travel itineraries.

Last July, we went to Baler. Naturally, we listed Museo de Baler as part of our plans. We saved it for last — one final stop before wrapping up our trip and heading back to Manila.

Despite its compact size, Museo de Baler is rich in history. From the ceiling down to the floor, the walls are filled with information about the indigenous Ilongot people and their way of life, the infamous Siege of Baler and the events surrounding it, and the life of Doña Aurora Quezon, the province’s namesake.

Of all the local museums we’ve visited — although not many — Museo de Baler has been the most enlightening.

TUWAD-TUWADAN POINT

On the northern tip of the island province of Catanduanes lies Tuwad-tuwadan Point. It's a vast grouping of grassy hills with beautiful scenery in all directions. To the northwest, you'll see a beautiful sunset being reflected off the sea. Directly west lies the province of Camarines Sur. To the south, you'll gaze upon the jagged mountains of Catanduanes. Lastly, to the east, lies the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Exploring the area is almost free albeit for the small amount of 10 pesos you have to pay for the environmental fee.

A commute for education

For residents of easternmost Camarines Sur, particularly those in the Caramoan Peninsula, access to higher education presents a unique challenge. A significant number of students choose Catanduanes State University over other schools within their home province primarily due to travel efficiency.

The traditional land route from Caramoan to Naga, a primary educational hub in Camarines Sur, can consume approximately four hours. But, a journey across the Maqueda Channel offers a quicker alternative. Students utilize motorized bancas from Guijalo port, traversing a mere six kilometers of open water. This sea crossing to the port of Codon typically takes one hour, with an additional hour for land travel to Catanduanes State University in Virac.

The advantage of a shorter sea trip over a long land journey influences educational choices and daily lives in this unique geographical context.
