"Abundance" is a vibrant oil on canvas that beautifully captures a scene of diligent labor and rich harvest, deeply rooted in the fishing traditions of Angono, Rizal. The painting depicts three figures engaged in what appears to be the sorting or preparing of a fresh catch by the serene waters of a fish pond or lake. The backdrop of a dramatic, cloud-filled blue sky adds a sense of grandeur to the everyday activity, while the lush green foreground hints at the fertile landscapes characteristic of the region. The careful composition draws the viewer's eye to the collaborative effort of the individuals, underscoring the communal spirit often found in traditional Angono communities.

The title "Abundance" resonates profoundly with Angono's identity as the "Art Capital of the Philippines" and a town historically sustained by its natural resources, particularly its fishing industry. The painting not only showcases the physical bounty derived from the waters but also subtly celebrates the abundance of hard work, cultural heritage, and simple living that defines the spirit of its people. Monasterial's work, through its realistic portrayal and evocative atmosphere, serves as a poignant tribute to the enduring traditions and the often-overlooked beauty of daily life in Angono, reflecting a deep respect for both nature's gifts and human endeavor.

"Luksong Tinik"
This painting by Ian Monasterial captures the joyful innocence of Filipino childhood, set against the warm, rustic charm of Angono — the art capital of the Philippines. Three children play a traditional outdoor game amid golden fields and sunlit trees, embodying the creativity and resourcefulness that thrive in rural communities. Their laughter and movement convey a timeless scene of camaraderie, imagination, and simple happiness found in everyday life.

Rooted in Angono’s vibrant artistic heritage, the piece reflects the town’s deep connection to both nature and community. Through expressive brushwork and earthy tones, Monasterial celebrates how Angono’s culture nurtures artistry even in the most ordinary moments — where play, friendship, and nature become living canvases of Filipino spirit and resilience.

"Mag-aayungin" captures the enduring tradition of fishing in Angono, Rizal, a town along the shores of Laguna de Bay. Angono is renowned as the "Art Capital of the Philippines" and is also historically a community whose way of life revolved around the lake's bounty. The term Mag-aayungin itself refers to a fisherman who catches ayungin (silver perch), a small, once-abundant, and highly prized freshwater fish native to the lake. The painting, with its dramatic, fiery sunset casting a warm glow over the water, not only depicts the daily labor of a lone fisherman in his boat but also evokes the profound, almost spiritual connection of the mangingisda (fisherman) to the lake.

The composition speaks to the rustic, challenging, yet deeply rooted life of the Angono fisherman. The dark, expressive clouds and intense colors of the setting sun reflect the dramatic environment of the lake, which sustains life but can also be unpredictable. The solitary figure, holding his traditional woven fish trap, symbolizes the dedication and patience required for this age-old livelihood, which has become increasingly difficult due to the scarcity of fish like the ayungin. This artwork, through its subject matter, serves as a poignant visual tribute to the hardworking lakeshore community and their resilience in maintaining a tradition that is central to Angono's identity.

"Liwanag sa Dilim" (Light in the Darkness) is a profoundly dramatic acrylic painting that utilizes chiaroscuro—the contrast between light and shadow—to capture a timeless Filipino narrative of resilience and hope. The canvas is dominated by an overwhelming darkness, from which the faces of three individuals emerge, their expressions ranging from worry to quiet determination. The sole source of illumination is a flickering, almost fragile flame held by the central figure, casting warm, golden light onto their faces. This stark lighting technique immediately establishes the painting's theme: in the midst of overwhelming hardship, represented by the surrounding gloom, true strength and guidance are found in a singular, focused source of "light"—a metaphor for faith, truth, or collective resolve.

The painting’s strong use of light and dark connects directly to Angono, Rizal's rich artistic tradition, often rooted in social realism and the portrayal of Filipino community life. Following in the footsteps of masters like National Artist Carlos "Botong" Francisco, whose works celebrated local customs and the bayanihan spirit, Angono artists possess a unique sensitivity to the struggles and collective perseverance of the people. "Liwanag sa Dilim" embodies this spirit, visually translating the Filipino concept of resilience—the capacity to remain hopeful and united amidst adversity—into a powerful image. It is a testament to the town’s continuing legacy of producing art that reflects not just beauty, but the spiritual and moral strength of the community.

"Hari ng Angono, Hari ng Mundo" is a breathtaking visual representation of profound Christian devotion, capturing the moment of Christ’s suffering and ultimate sacrifice for humanity's sins. The painting uses a dramatic contrast of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, to pull the viewer into the sacred solitude of the Passion. Christ's body is bowed and heavily shadowed, reflecting the crushing weight of the cross—a symbol of the burden of all human sin that He willingly took upon Himself. The sole burst of color is the sweeping crimson drape, which serves a dual purpose: it signifies His royalty as the "Hari ng Mundo" (King of the World) while also evoking the blood He shed as the ultimate act of love, mercy, and atonement for our transgressions. The work thus becomes a powerful meditation on the cost of grace, where the physical anguish of the Son of God secures our spiritual freedom and eternal salvation.

This work is firmly rooted in the Angono, Rizal art tradition and serves as a moving devotional piece, inviting the viewer into a deep spiritual introspection on the meaning of Christ's sacrifice. The dark, expressive brushwork emphasizes the reality of His pain and the totality of His gift, urging the faithful to reflect on the magnitude of the "Malaking Pag-ibig" (Great Love) that compelled the King of Kings to become a sacrificial lamb. By placing the viewer face-to-face with this moment of via dolorosa, the painting transcends mere representation to become an altar for personal repentance and thanksgiving.

"Tapang ng Maka-Diyos" (Godly Courage) is a powerful acrylic portrait of a lion, rendered with striking white and ethereal blue tones, immediately connecting the artwork to a sense of divine strength and spiritual power. In the context of Angono, Rizal, which is celebrated as the "Art Capital of the Philippines" and is steeped in religious tradition, this depiction of a majestic lion symbolizes the courage, authority, and unwavering conviction inherent in a deep, enduring faith. The lion, a universal religious motif representing the strength of God and often associated with Christ as the "Lion of Judah," is portrayed not with aggression, but with a calm, penetrating gaze, suggesting that true faith is the source of all fortitude.

This piece speaks directly to the creative and spiritual ethos of Angono, where art often serves as a reflection of communal belief and resilience. The town's vibrant artistic tradition—passed down through generations of artists like the Blanco family and National Artist Carlos "Botong" Francisco—is often focused on themes of life, faith, and local identity. "Tapang ng Maka-Diyos" transcends a simple animal portrait; it becomes an allegorical reflection of the spiritual strength that underpins the community. It represents the inner "Godly Courage" needed to face life's challenges, embodying the quiet, yet fierce, conviction that forms a vital, unshakeable part of the Filipino Christian experience in this renowned lakeside town.
