Artists statement -“It has always been stimulating creatively and physically to be where the land meets the sea. Living on the coast is essential for me, whether it’s on a farm, island, village or boat.
I have been using marine charts in my assemblages, collages and paintings for over 20 years. The
paintings differ a little in style according to the age of the chart. The older ones are in fathoms with black
print on thick browned paper while the new charts are in metres with bright colours on thin white paper,
with many variences in between.
My paintings are illustrative in style, using multiple layers of acrylic paint to achieve depth and colour,
finishing with several coats of urethane. I match species of fish to charts of the areas they are found.
These are original charts, some well used.
I also paint on demolition timber from buildings and boats...anything that has an inherent history.
I have a fascination for and collect fish identification charts during my travels. From the ones in NZ chip
shops to the browned and curled relics in a Spanish fishermen’s bar, and the beautifully reproduced
posters of Iceland’s cold water species.
Currently I live and work in Thames, drawing much inspiration from the surrounding Coromandel
peninsula.” 💫

A relaxed, therapeutic and social workshop—ideal for anyone who enjoys slow, hands-on creativity and the charm of sending real mail.
Create unique, layered collages using vintage materials like old book pages, maps, faded aerograms, and yellowed newspapers. You’ll turn these into personal cards and postcards, learning simple tips on choosing papers, composing images, and highlighting interesting text and pictures.
All materials and tools are provided, and you’re welcome to bring your own special papers to include. After the session, your pieces will be left to dry and be varnished, ready for you to collect the following week.
